2017 Roster Discussion

It's pretty disappointing tbh. I'm biased in this case because I'm not a fan of Legia at all, but it would appear the player just wanted to stay to thank the team that took a chance on him, signed him on a free transfer and gave him a chance in the Champions League.
I think Champions League is the big factor. Someone made this point much more eloquently (don't remember if it was on the forum or elsewhere), but if MLS is struggling to get players from the Polish League and similar, it's because of CL.

And the bad news is there isn't an obvious way around that. Merging CONCACAF and CONMEBOL into a Super-American CL helps with the competition level, but not the prestige/history.

Arsenal wanted Almiron, Vilalba had interest in Italy and Atlanta still got them yet we lose out to Stuttgart?
We're going after Euro based players when like someone pointed out on the previous page (sorry can't think of your name), SA players might be easier to convince to come here because there's not the carrot of playing in the UCL yet.

Vieira told reporters the team was looking to sign a third DP before the season started, guess they'll have to look elsewhere.
I like that Kompany was involved. Would love to bring him over.
One of our SuperDraft picks needs to be more professional on social media...

@Mike_NO_Ike03

He liked a video of a guy getting killed by a tiger at a zoo. WHAT DECENT PUBLIC PERSON LIKES THAT?!?

Part of me wants him to not get a contract from us so I can unfollow him.
I've brought this up before when he shared the video of Mexican school shooting.

It's also possible that the current post election political environment is playing a factor in deterring players particularly from Europe. To the rest of the world there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding what's going on I'm not trying to start that debate but I do think it should be noted that it could be factoring into some players decisions.

Can we pick something to be upset about and stick to it? In the years past it was that we're buying old names to sell tickets (pirlo/Lampard). Rather than paying more for young talent and building a squad that can compete with the speed/physicality of this league. Now that we are targeting youth we're upset that we couldn't land Khedira. Despite the fact even PV said he wasn't an option (maybe because he had no interest?)
With Ofoe it's as simple as he doesn't want to leave the club he's at. Even if it means more money. So what if ATL is getting guys. Maybe if we were interested in those specific players we'd sign them too. But we're not interested so they went to ATL.
I'm certain that we've gone through 5-10 DP offers this offseason. We only hear about the ones that the club/player want us to. In this case the player came out and publicly stated he rejected it likely because he wants to earn respect amongst the fans and show them he is dedicated.
False outrage if you ask me. If we get a guy before the season starts or midway it will be someone in the mold of who the club is looking for.

If only Toronto won MLS Cup, then we would have qualified for the Champions League and all those million or a million and half players would want to come to NYCFC.

100%. That's the key word..."based". It's not European vs SA players...it's more about where they are playing. South Americans playing in Europe aren't coming here either. Have to poach the SA teams regardless of a players origin.

I'm just saiyan....I feel like we have a good foundation, if we can add a DP with a Lodeiro/Piatti/Giovinco type impact we'd be legit title contenders. I know I should cut the club some slack, the window isn't closed yet. It just gets frustrating seeing us lose out on the promising talent we're linked to.

Hmm, who do I trust more Vieira or Crooks?

#CrookCrooks with a fake quote? Or Vieira transfer hubris?

Your hatred of Crooks is getting...

Also, if you want to being up SA players remember we struck out on Fernando Uribe. He was playing in Colombia

Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but every team strikes out. Atlanta missed out on Oscar Romero when it looked like all but a done deal.

I know Seattle also missed out on a couple major targets last year which is why they were able to get Lodiero in the summer
