2017 Roster Discussion

I'm not one to envy other teams but I'm seeing what ATL is doing and while it's still unproven as they haven't played yet, what the fuck were we doing in 2015? Holy shit. With all the talk of CFG scouting and money and know how etc, look at our opening day roster.

They half assed that season bad. I really do question their intentions sometimes and motivation. It was reported today that the league allows the team to pretty have full control of their roster and doesn't interfere also garner said the league doesn't help with fees anymore so why aren't we stepping up to the plate?? I just feel like nycfc isn't a priority...

I'm not defending our 2015 roster but you can't use Atlanta as a point of comparison. They're operating under very different circumstances with tons more GAM and TAM. We don't know how much but it sure seems to be a lot. It's not a fair or meaningful comparison.

Forget comparing first years, I don't like us compared to them this year.

Garber said the league doesnt play favorites anymore. Same interview he said that the league would help pay the fee for canadian dps which mean bringing atiba hutchinson.

2015 roster was a collective example how not to create a team. Kreis has made a career and a lot of money off of Beckermans ball bag.

Live look at Kreis' skills on display

Isn't the Pirlo safety valve position a critical one for us? Most of us would say that AI was one of our most important pieces last season, if not the most important. So, if Ring turns out to be the solution, how is that a bad thing? He is an experienced international with it seems poise, distribution ability and some tenacity. Ding ding ding. I don't see how we are wasting his skillset if he is filling our most crucial need. And to the extent he has an offensive upside, he can certainly take the shots and make the passes AI liked to punt on. If the position is important enough for us to dream about filling it with Khedira, it shouldn't be a concern that we are wasting it on a guy like Ring. I don't even know if he's the guy, as it may be a PTBNL, Herrera, or Chanot. But if it is, and it works, that's a great thing.

I was scared of Atlanta months ago. Now it seems like every day they sign another impact player and I'm just scratching my head. Josef Martinez looked terrifying in Copa America. They really are stacked, and it would take a Kreis-esque level of instruction and formation selection to screw it up for them. I think they just go 4-2-3-1, at least to start the season with all the young attacking talent they have.

Edit: Although, imagine the fear of the rest of MLS when they heard the new NYC team signed Villa, Lampard and Pirlo. Considerably more terrifying, but clearly nobody can tell how it will shake out in the end. Hopefully Atlanta resign to mid table obscurity this year, but I'm still scared.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Kreis set back NYCFC by YEARS with his first season player accumulation. He personally fcked up the Cap hit that in a league like MLS cannot be undone in a single transfer window/off-season.... we're now on our third transfer window/second off-season and we still haven't shed everything. We are effectively two+ years behind considering we now have burned through our expansion GAM$$, so unfortunately comparing this year's team to ATL is Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan 's worst nightmare.

I've watched a few Torino games and Josef Martinez has incredible natural ability. What he lacks, he can improve on. He's also only 23.

There's plenty of guys like this in Europe to go after. His signing comes down to good scouting and being aggressive. Sometimes I think our problem is the front office isn't aggressive but sits back with the -we're better than everyone else and players should be begging to come here- attitude.

all this doom and gloom over a team that has yet to play a preseason game ( though on paper atlanta looks good)....but in this league two years i have followed the league more closely i noticed that anyone can beat anyone in this league and that you dont have to be in the top two to win the MLS cup just get hot at right time ( portland/ sounders)

save your analysis till end of season see how bad we did in comparison to atlanta, or at least until we play them

Sucks, poor guy got screwed over by injuries and a bad surgery.

Tying the thread together neatly, Brandt and one of Atlanta's big signings Garza, both had issues with sports hernias. Garza may have issues because of that

Good luck pulling 23-year-olds with any upside at all from Europe. They're still dreaming of Champions League.

Pull them from Latin America - get out ahead of the European clubs and pay them a little more. MLS is not a stepping stone from Europe back to Europe, but it can be from Ecuador to Europe.

Aside from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Mexico, the city also has huge Ecuadorian, and Colombian populations. Target those two countries. Hire a top Colombian coach as Sporting Director, VP of Latin American Scouting. Get Reyna a cap guru, if he's not. Work the system.

Has MLS really ever tried to recruit from the ranks of Liga MX? I've started watching games here and there in Liga MX and they are incredibly fun to watch. I don't know what a Liga MX player makes, but there have to be options there

LigaMX is still a step up in quality from MLS. I would bet that only Americans would come to MLS over MX.

Can't say we haven't been doing that. We've hit on Matarrita, and have tried with Bravo, Mena, Mendoza (1 and 2), Callens still to come here.

Risk is higher with those guys, I think they'd like to get a better guarantee on established euro guys rather than splashing DP dollars on south american younger guys.

They've always been paid a bit too much to poach - $200k+ for your average player. They still poach from us (Villafana, Omar Gonzalez, Ventura Alvarez), but by 2022 we should be the highest paying league in the Americas.
