2017 Roster Discussion

MASSIVELY overlooked news today - squad numbers! The newbies in full:

2 - Sweat
6 - Callens
8 - Ring
9 - Okoli
10 - Moralez
12 - Stertzer
14 - Awuah
17 - Lewis
23 - Wallace
30 - Herrera
99 - Camargo

As a squad numbers purist, I am prepared to read ridiculous amounts into these choices:

* Ben Sweat wearing #2? Really?
* Can't see Ring not making the starting XI
* Is Callens preferred to Brillant at this point?
* Which new signing is most pissed off at the guys taking up some seriously valuable squad number real estate (lookin' at you Lopez and White)?
* Camargo is probably a dick
* Any superstars out there known for wearing 16, 18 or 20? They're all vacant right now (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer summer DP signing CONFIRMED)

Hernandez switched from 21 to 2 when Pirlo arrived. Our DP will surely make an arrangement with Callens...Khedira

I really don't want to get into this Mix stuff and with just two days away, I think we can officially start predicitions for the Opening Day lineup. I assume we're all going to agree on Johnson, Mata, Chanot, Pirlo, Maxi, Harrison, and Villa. Questions are at:
RB- Does RJ just slot in, or Chanot to RB with Callens and Brillant through the middle? I see rumors about Herrera being able at RB but I won't believe it until I see it.
LW- Are we ready with Wallace or does PV stick with TMac at least to start?
CDM- I'd say 90% of us are assuming Ring, but maybe Herrera? Maybe both start and Maxi to LW?
Subs- Camargo first attacker on regardless? If Wallace doesn't start, maybe bring him in for extra defense? Khiry to just wear down tired defenders like he did at the end of last year? Ethan White to RB (bleh)? Okoli?

Excited for this game, been getting hyped up a good bit by ESPN. Season is here boys!

So, we have 10 international spots (2 expire at the end of 2017) and 9 international players. So there isn't a mystery spot NYCFCfan NYCFCfan.

So, 1 international spot for the summer. KHEDIRA! (Or Torres)
I'm pissed this news broke as I was at the airport.

Anyways I'm back, what did I miss?

*looks at timeline*

Wow, is this the first official international spot reporting? We officially have 10, and it tells us where the two extra were received from, but not when they expire.

Yes, it's the first time that number of spots have been posted publicly. Transparency!

Still doesn't explain where the permanent spot that Chivas USA acquired went. Probably MLS just resat all the international spots sometime...

A gift from MLSsoccer.com, our roster broken down in its entire in terms of category with Eirik Johansen's first and last name spelled incorrectly.

Impressive level of transparency for MLS. The big question is, did they trade for the extra international spot with plans for the summer or as a hedge in case any of the 3 green cards fell through

Also, to save you the typing, yes we all know you think it's for Khedira.

So Sean Okoli is essentially making $55k a year right? Has to be less than Lopez who is on about $60k in wages if Okoli is on the supplemental roster and his salary isn't hitting our cap number.

Good job by MLS here

Yeah, pretty much shows that any USL player, even the offensive MVP, will be signing minimum salaries when the make the jump to MLS.

Wonder if it's a two fold factor:
1. Gotta prove themselves in MLS before 2nd contract
2. Turning the screws on any players that elect not to sign with MLS and instead take their chances with NASL/USL.

This is weird. The first bullet makes it seem like you're correct. The second one makes it seem as though it's a "minimum".
  • Players occupying roster spots 25-28 may be filled with Players earning either (i) the Reserve Minimum Salary ($53,000 in 2017) or (ii) Homegrown Players earning more than the Reserve Minimum Salary subject to the Homegrown Player Subsidy.
  • Reserve Minimum Salary Players must be 24-years-old or younger during the league year. (Age of player is determined by year - not date - of birth.)
  • These slots may not be filled with Senior Minimum Salary Players or Generation adidas Players.
  • All Players in slots 25-28 must be paid a base salary which is at least the Reserve Minimum Salary: $53,000.
In any event, that's very much only "base" comp. He's got bonuses in his contract and from the CBA that probably make it a much bigger pay bump than we presume. (eg, CBA guarantees him $750 per sub, $1500 per start bonus). I've also heard rumor that it's in no way discouraged for players to get housing and transportation covered. Consider it the teams' way of self-funding allocation money.

People (not you specifically, just saying) need to get off the hate on the MLS salary levels. Relative to most of the world, MLS players are paid fine to very well. And it's reliable and timely, which matters a whole lot to people.

I'm not hating on the salaries of MLS, but my point was that MLS likely strongarms players that haven't fallen in line either by going to the other leagues or are seen as an easy "mark" as a new domestic player to the league.
