2017 Roster Discussion

Hell, maybe we can get him for Hernandez/Mena money (~$200k-300k). Transfermarkt lists his value pretty high at over $1 million, but reality might be different.

They wanted a transfer fee last winter. I don't know what his wages are and I don't know if he wasn't moved because he asked to stay or if his wages/the asking price just didn't make sense for anyone.

It was almost certainly the asking price.

There is a major shortage of good US players, and that shortage will have been significantly exacerbated in 2017 with the addition of 4 MLS teams in 3 playing seasons. As we well know, the one thing a MLS club cannot really do well is outright purchase players, this is entirely due to the way the rules are constructed.

Having a GAM or TAM level player with US eligibility is a real and scarce commodity. There are exactly two reasons that type of player would not already be playing in MLS.

1. He wants to test himself at a higher level.
2. The club who has his contract wants real money for his transfer.

When you think about what MLS has become quality wise, in the last 4 years, the major effect has been acting like a vacuum for damn near every single decent American player.

This is a fantastic post. Best of the day.

I wonder if MLS could exclude the transfer fee paid for Americans from the player's cap hit. If you can buy Alvarado for $1 Million and pay him $400k in wages - you probably have 10 teams line up for him. Otherwise, he costs $650k over 4 years. Tough to fit that under the current cap structure

Afful came up in the Matchday thread.

If you make the CCL, you can afford to buy the right-footed version of Matarrita.

Our international scouting hasn't been 100% but I don't think we give CFG enough credit for player targeting.

What other MLS club would have found Matarrita, Bravo, Mendoza, Chanot?

Agreed. Would also add Brillant and Iraola to that pot.

This might be the busiest thread starting Monday morning.

Question for the board. I will assume that Lampard ($470k), Mix ($470k) and two of Mena/Hernandez/White ($390k) will not be with the team next season. I will assume that we use our open DP slot in the summer ($235k cap hit) and spread the other cap savings around. I will also assume that McNamara, Allen and Johannssen get raises. That leaves you with about $1.0 Million in Cap Space to reinvest in this team. How do you spend it?

I think we need an upgrade at RB. I think we need cheaper cover at CB. I think we are lacking a true creative midfielder (but I think we get that in the DP Slot). And this is assuming Iraola is still here.

After seeing the embrace between PV and Afful I would really like us buying him. He's contracted at $275,000 right now. He was rumored to be on a one year contract and was signed on 'discovery' claim. Meaning it wasn't exactly his choice to go there.
Also, here are our 2016 Salaries.

Ideally, we replace everyone on the low salaries with more quality through Man City EDS players. However, we would need a lot of international spots for that to happen.

It's imperative that Johansen and Harrison, and anyone else possible, to get green cards for 2017. Forget lobbying for a stadium, lobby the politicians to move their applications forward.

It's not necessarily dependent on how long you've been here, although I will admit I don't know the ins and the outs.

Citizenship requires 5 years of residency on a green card - or 3 years if you are married to a citizen (so, come on everybody, let's set up Jack Harrison with available bachelorettes).

This might be a better way of viewing our roster. Remember only top 20 salaries count vs the cap.

Please note, I need to update it and add Chanot, drop Mullins and poku. I'll do that after I finish up the fantasy league this week...

If there is a Matarrita out there, there must be a right footed version in Central or South America.

In fact, I would be surprised if the CFG scouting network hasn't uncovered that player already. We have an incredible advantage. How many other teams in MLS could have found a Chanot, Brillant, Matarrita or Iraola? Maybe the Galaxy?
