2017 Roster Discussion

I think the only reasonable complaint any of us could have with the line-up, due to fitness concerns, is why McNamara wasn't given the start in midfield and Lopez was. That's your nit to pick.
Even that I think is the wrong questions. Mikey served his purpose. I think if you had asked anyone on this board, would you take a 0-0 scoreline at 60' with Frank coming on fresh, we all would have jumped at it. I think more reasonable questions are:
  • Why remove our iron man Villa?
  • Why not give him and Frank 30 full minutes together to work their magic?
  • Why not bring TMac in during that final 30? AHABS, he is our 3rd leading producer all time.
To me those questions are way bigger than Mikey (at least in terms of output), who basically achieved everything you want from him short of drawing a yellow from Bradley - a pretty tall order.

I think he managed the first 60 minutes the best he could considering fitness.

I almost wonder if he was a bit psychologically scarred from having to manage injuries with 2 of his 3 DPs and that influenced his subbing out Villa. Like he didn't want to risk an injury to his 3rd DP as well.

All valid points, but I actually thought the move to take Villa off and bring Shelton on there was a good one.

We weren't possessing the ball and our only attacking play was to play the long ball. That doesn't really suit Villa and moreso suits Shelton. Bringing in Shelton there and his wheels gave us a chance to steal a goal perhaps.

With the way that game was going, Villa just wasn't going to be very effective.

I agree Shelton has been better in the air lately and is a good bit taller, but I'd still take Villa over him any day with a long ball. I forget which game it was last year but his goal from a Pirlo overhead lob while he was sandwiched between 2 defenders, somehow comes out with it, scores, rips his shirt off, takes the yellow... probably my favorite goal to date.

IMO you just can't take Villa off in the playoffs. I'd take the keeper out before subbing him off.

I'd have played both. Let Shelton knock them down.

Honestly, I think Villa could play a semi-Giovinco role in the future if we signed another striker. He's creative enough - in times like these we're facing he's just got to be on the field somewhere.

This.

Shelton in for Mendoza, Villa shifts left. Or Shelton in for Bravo, taking RW, Harrison shifts to CM.

Of those two, the score was still 0-0. So you probably go with the Mendoza swap to keep more defense still in the game.

DC United. Pirlo not only lobbed, but curved the ball with spin so that it curled in front of the goalie and around the first defender. Brilliance!

I love this. Let him play as a #10. Why not? I think it mandates a tactical shift into a flat 4-4-2 OR a 4-2-3-1. Henry did this. Especially on our tiny pitch, you can get away with it. Assuming Lampard isn't here next year, maybe go get a Target Striker with that DP slot.

Can you get away with Pirlo and Iraola as your two holding Mids? I almost want to say you need a true #6 there and that hurts us offensively...

Or maybe go 3-5-2 with Iraola as your Sweeper and Pirlo/#6 in the pivot? Play a triangle formation in Central Midfield?

Definitely can't do it in a 4-3-3, unless we pinch him in/play him higher up than we do Tommy when he's there.

But I don't really ever feel like we are in true 4-3-3 anyway, honestly. I think they should do that. It might add a year or two to his career if you have someone to run for him and let him assume Frank's role.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is available on a free. I think he could score 25 goals in MLS. I'm a huge fan of the Hunter. I'm irrationally enthused by his impending free agency. Go two up front with Huntelaar holding up play, Villa, Harrison and Matarrita running the channels. Huntelaar is Lampard on steroids when it comes to vulturing goals.

I can see at least 10 players from this year's roster no longer on the team heading into 2017.

Viera needs to find a reasonable mix of what he wants to play and what we should play. MLS is evolving quick. It's still a fast & strong league...but now teams are combining that with a more evolved game play. If Viera is adaptable & walks away from this year being a learning experience, we are in good shape...if he is stubborn and thinks he's the smartest guy in the league, we're screwed.

So Lampard contract is up.
Villa has another year, negotiating for extension.
Pirlo signed a 2 1/2 year deal with next year as an option...if I remember right, it was his option?

If we have 2 DP slots open up, it gets interesting. Not coinciding with other leagues sucks for this. Maybe sign 1 before season, 1 during. Wonder how much influence Viera will have on it too.

Who do we all think we'll lose in the expansion draft? We can protect 11 and only lose 1. So who, I guess, is the Best Of The Worst?

Or, is this how we get Mix off the books?

So, assuming we have the 2 DP slots open (granted, it's not a small assumption to make but...), where do we use them? While I think it's extremely tempting to go search for another DP striker to help Villa carry the goal burden, I think our season dictates we use our 2 DP slots elsewhere. I think the 3 DPs in MLS are best used when you have one creating, one finishing, and one destroying.

I'd love to see one DP slot used on a young-ish creative midfielder. A number of teams in MLS have shown that having a Piatti, Valeri, Lodeiro type player works wonders.

With the 2nd open DP slot, I hope we find either a great defensive midfielder that can sit in front of our back line and destroy (a la Beckerman in his prime), or a great center back. Whichever we use the DP slot on, we should use all the TAM, GAM (and whatever other kind of -AM the MLS launches for 2017) for the other (e.g., if DP defensive mid, then TAM/GAM center back). Particularly with Vieira wanting to play out of the back, and on our tiny field (neither of which appear to be changing any time soon), we need quality in the back.

We could go out and find another attacking player, but goal scoring was not our problem... we gave up the third most goals in the regular season, and got crushed several times this year. You look at the teams left in the playoffs (Montreal, Toronto, Colorado and Seattle) and yes they can definitely score goals, but they have some of the best defenses in the league. Ciman shuts everything down for Montreal, Toronto plays solid team defense, Seattle has veteran chemistry with Scott and Marshall, and Colorado has the best defense in the league. You can attempt to build chemistry in the back over the longterm, but I think we need fixing now, so I'd say we need to spend money in the back.

Yah, as said in the Toronto post-match thread by Keith Putnam Keith Putnam , will be interesting if Vieira goes out and tries to find the missing pieces for his preferred style or tries to build a team for a system that works within the constraints of MLS.

Toronto's system seems pretty optimized for MLS. If all else fails, their fallback is to play it long to two of the most dangerous forwards in the league. Ours on the other hand only works if every single player gets it right / we have great players in every part of the pitch.

Positional priority this offseason?

As much as I want to throw another DP on offense, that isn't our problem. We play from the back thru the midfield:

CB
RB
CM
CM
LW
I don't deny we need help in the back, but give Brillant and Chanot more time to gel and they'll be fine. Yes to a RB though.

Where we really need more help in the midfield with two new guys that run non-stop, win balls, and have the ability to control the ball. Far too often we were overrun in the midfield this year. I think that's entirely attributed to our guys being older/slower - we need serious youth/skill there.

They also have to have that certain je ne sais quois, apparently.
