2017 Roster Discussion

What I know (told by a member of the organization):
- The team has offered Frank the option to come back. The expectation is that he is retiring and going home.
- Mix Diskerud will never suit up for NYCFC in a competitive match again, short of the team being sold to a different ownership group.

What I think I know (based on the same conversation):
- Diskerud will be left unprotected in the Expansion Draft.
- None of the current loanees will be purchased.
- Tommy McNamara could be used as trade bait to improve the team.
- The organization views Jack Harrison as a Central Midfielder. This year, they didn't believe they had the appropriate amount of depth out wide to give him quality minutes centrally.
- There are still some personality issues on this team that they hope to rid themselves of in the offseason.

Regarding Mix, I believe the rule says if a player has a no trade clause, he must be protected. But whatever, the point is there is no way he's on the team next year, doesn't really matter how we get rid of him.

Would love to see us bring in some wingers and move Jack to midfield.

I wonder what personalities are the biggest problems. Mikey and Shelton were suspended that one time, but they don't seem in anyone's doghouse. Does it mean DPs that don't want to be here? Honestly can't think of who it might be.

Elaborate

I don't have any names beyond the one. I'm sorry. I think the franchise is experiencing some of the same growing pains that Man City did back in 2008/2009. It takes time to build a culture and a family. In the beginning, there will always be folks that don't fit the mold. Balotelli and Tevez were terrific, but it was obvious they weren't "Man City" players. Look at Toure. I know there has been some discussion of Toure coming here, but I think there is a better chance that Lampard returns than Toure comes to New York. It's an organizational decision to keep him away.

Appreciate the update, hate the content.

Villa and Lampard have been fantastic. All I know about Pirlo is that he keeps to himself. He's been a very good teammate as well. I don't want that to be misconstrued. I know for a fact that Villa and Lampard are beloved by the organization. Pirlo is just quieter, a little shy. Keeps to himself. Different dude, that's all. I know there isn't a problem with Villa and Lampard and I'm pretty confident there is no issue with Pirlo as well, although I haven't been told that explicitly.

Very curious if this person gave any insight into the genesis of the Mix decision. You had to have asked about it.

Not surprised by TMac. He's a good MLS player with a very particular skill set that doesn't really fit what we need; not fast enough as a wing and gets knocked off the ball in midfield. But he has shown he has some great value and could easily see him playing for a club that uses 4or5 midfielders..... D.C. or Orlando or Philly??? If no trade then he's a solid squad player with increases our depth. Win/win.

The personality issues is interesting.... I wonder if it's friction towards the coaches or towards other players? Because of playing time or playing ability (of other players) or tactics? Just spitballing, but Iraola was benched for a while when he lost his RB spot, and while he became a full time starter in DMid, maybe he was not the happiest/quietest during his benching?

What's interesting is that I was told explicitly that they personality issues were with American players.

Insight was given into the Mix decision, yes. I want to be careful with what I say here - so I think the easiest way to explain it is that PV expects his guys to be a family. You are all in or you are out.

Elaborate on this please. We all know that there is something that kept Mix from playing this year, but that implies that it is more than just "coach doesn't like me" - that he is banned by the entire CFG ownership group?

Did he piss in Ferran Sorriano's cheerios or something?

I would be REALLY sad to see T-Mac go. That being said, he outperforms his contract and in the right system, he's a 10 goal scorer at 24 years old. They don't grow on trees. Similar to Poku - if there is an opportunity out there to turn McNamara into an asset we really need (Poku enabled us to get Chanot), then I would understand the move.

The Poku move turned out to be particularly wise given that he also apparently has fallen out of favor and form in Miami for the same on-field deficiencies.

Sad if that's the case. Great managers have to be able to manage all personalities to get the best out of the team. If it is true that PV banished mix with the result being Mikey Lopez starting a playoff game, then that is a huge mark against PV in my book.

Why? You can't let the inmates run the asylum. Do you think MCFC win two Prem titles if Balotelli and Tevez were in control? There's a reason they buy guys like Aguerro, Silva and Kompany and shy away from the guys that Man United purchase. Sam Et'o was never going to suit up for a CFG side.

Makes sense in which players you buy, but not in which you play once they are on the team. Yankees won with insane personalities. Stories of tons of teams that successfully managed diverse viewpoints to succeed. You are never going to get 100% kumbaya on a team. PV is a rookie coach though, I am sure he will learn from this.

I guess we agree to disagree.

its PV's style....just like any manager around the world has their style...some care more than others.
So our roster from a Salary Cap perspective looks like this. I highlighted the players I'm assuming are gone. I left Pirlo off that list, since it's not a given. We'll save about $2mm in cap space by releasing these players, be 3 players short of a full roster, but only about $500,000 under the cap. However there is no reason not to think we use TAM & GAM to go above the cap like we've done the previous two year. Especially if we're given extra GAM for CCL qualification.

* Chanot's salary is assumed based on his listed $380k being prorated for half a season. It's so high because NYCFCfan NYCFCfan let us know we had to pay a $600,000 transfer fee, which we don't know how many years it's pr0rated over ( 3=$200k, 4=$150k) and added to the listed salary.
** I don't know if Norris Ethan White qualifies as a HG anymore, but it doesn't matter, he's most probably gone.

After the cuts in red.

i dont think saunders is gone...didnt they give him a "multiple year extension"? its only been 1 year of that.

mix is a whole mystery....if he has no trade clause then hes gonna get paid to just live in nyc. well find out when protected lists come out.

didnt know hernandez was that expensive...wow

They love Saunders. I would be surprised if he isn't retained, despite what Glenn Crooks thinks

Who is they? I have a complete opposite view. If we're going with Eirik, there's no need for a 36 year old at the start of the season earning $150K sitting on the bench.

Saunders may retire too, or find work in another MLS team or American league.

The organization likes him. He's a good guy and good in the clubhouse. When you factor in the fact that Eirik doesn't count against the cap, it's not terrible to have 150k of salary cap invested in your goalkeepers only.

If you plan on Eirik starting, why complicate things with Saunders?
