2017 Roster Discussion

I still want the best available DP regardless of position(not keeper). If CDM, great, but with all the names on the board it feels like we're going for a non-DP at CDM

I don't get the fascination with transfer fees -- either by the team or by people here. Outside of DPs, the team has a fixed budget for player employment costs that includes transfer fees along with salary. The more they spend on fees the less they have for salary. They don't really save money either way. Now if they can spend some transfer fee $$ and get better players without blowing the salary budget I'm all for it, but I don't see how doing the opposite saves them money or shows them to be cheap.

Of course the DP situation is another issue. DP transfer fees are outside the budget and if we're not getting the right DPs because we'll pay millions in salary but $0 for fees that's a problem, but the discussion here seems to be broader than our one open DP slot.

What am I missing?
I think you're right and it is all about the DP slots.

For me, it's that the DP slot has a trickle down impact. Given the scenario people were proposing for signing Ofori as a young DP and rolling it into TAM-level contract, then rinse & repeat, the long-term ramification would be that they aren't willing to make that investment once (must less repeatedly).

Secondly, and just as importantly, is what you point out. if we aren't going to pay transfer fees period, then we aren't necessarily getting the best available (and willing) player. We're instead going to Century 21 and picking up that pair of cashmere socks just because the price is 90% of retail.

And to add to the above, I think transfer fees (for DPs anyway) is one of the very few ways to spend big money outside the cap. And we all like to think our owners willing to do what it takes to win. So when there is this big opportunity to distinguish ourselves just sitting out there, and we show no intention to utilize it, we all get irritated.

Honestly, I expected us to be a little more on the Chinese Super League DP blueprint. No one from CFG explicitly suggested that would be the case, but based on their history elsewhere, it is pretty easily justifiable in the mind of a fan.

Yep. I really would have liked a play for Tevez. He may be getting up there in age but he would have destroyed every defense in MLS. I don't even think we would have had to match the Chinese money in their outer orbit - just get in the upper stratosphere and let living in NYC do the rest. There a lot to be said for being able to communicate with people when you leave the apartment.

Didn't know that. Saw some PL teams interested in him the last few days. Thought he was good to go. I like his play. His fitness is prob shit right now though.

So this is just about the open DP slot? Not that I'm diminishing that - I'm just looking to understand.

I'm saying that I agree we have a fixed cost budget. But player costs involve fees and wages. My example was extreme, I admit. But the $6 million players on their last legs may not fit. If you are committed to paying Villa $25 million over 4 years, commit to a similar cost for a player that requires a transfer fee and lower wages.

Put me back in the pissed off camp.

Still a few weeks left in pre-season. But I don't see where the team is materially better right now than last year.

And for 25,000 fans at $40 a ticket per game, go spend some damn transfer money. Blow us away.
I know I complain a lot but damn man I couldn't of said this any better that's my point

People say we aren't cheap because of what we pay our 2 dps in salary but that's nothing compared to what the mothership is paying at man city. I know we can't build a roster with unlimited funds but we can with at 3 dp spots and we have been super cheap by cfg standards. I just get so pissed off when they will spend 200m in a window on man city but can't drop 10m on one player for nycfc

SJ1 is American. No need for Rawls.
Lopez couls still be out by then.
Lewis will probably be playing in U20 WC
Our #1 keeper is not going to be playing Open Cup games unless we are in the finals. Then plug in Awuah for lopez and Brown for Lewis. Ethan White probably gets cup playing time as well. We have American depth now that should be good enough for the first couple of USOC rounds.

Go out and buy a player like Emerson Hyndman for $10 Million and pay him $2 Million a year over the next 4 years. $18 Million investment.

And we should have a full expectation that any player like that that the club invests in will be sold off. And I am OK with that. I've said this before, go do what Celtic does. Celtic has a unique attraction as a "big club" in a small pond. People want to play there because of the history and the ability to play in the UCL every year. Come to MLS, play for a big club in a small pond. Have the ability to play and live in NYC. And we will commit to sell you on after we have fully developed you.

I agree I would have loved to get Tevez and I am in the same boat I don't want old shitty legs dragging down our team... but he would destroy this league and the suspect at best defenses. I am interested to see what we do with that last spot. I want a new DP or at least a fucking rumor.

Agree with this and hope that it ends up developing into something like Celtic. Emmerson isn't leaving Europe but a player like that I agree 100%. Miazga or a similar type player has to be available from one of the larger clubs.

Well there was a rumor...and then when he signed for another club, people started crying about how cheap CFG is.

Exactly. I don't know enough about the Dutch, Norwegian, Belgian, Portuguese leagues to know who is coming through right now, but a younger player who wants time and requires a fee. A guy like Patrick Roberts who CFG bought two years ago and is playing GREAT at Celtic.

I never got that particular bit of whining. That Chinese club paid him $41mm a year. That is literally stupid money, its stupid to try and compete with that much money. And if we really going to burn $10mm + in salary on a player, you can sure that they would be younger and have a hell of a lot more impact that Carlos Tevez.

Tevez would have insane impact in MLS. He's a bull and a ballerina combined that can create his own shot.

Sorry, talking about Ofori, and the rumor we could be signing him as a young DP
