Yes/no. Unless Barco is coming back from an injury or he’s made more passes at a teammates GF, he’s now a coaches decision sub for a number of matches running. That’s a pretty expensive sub ($15m?) considering he lost his starting spot to a much cheaper option. Next year will probably see him again as a starter, but as of now, Tata doesn’t seem impressed. If it goes on next year, his value is gonna take a hit - it may already have.

Edit- that was only a critique of ATL’s giant signing. Our FO has been pretty bad so far at splashing the cash and being aggressive. It’s a trend they need to break when replacing Villa.

This was good business but ATL - paid a hefty transfer fee (by MLS standards) for a young stud attacker, got two quality years out of him with likely silverware, and selling his rights before contract expires for nearly double what they paid which nets them max GAM plus extra cash for operating expenses.

Have any of the Arsenal scouts seen his right foot? His exceptional talent and skill at the MLS level allow him to compensate for his weak foot here, but I am afraid that this will be substantially exploited in the top tier. It is painful to watch.

With that said, great transaction by Atlanta. It will be interesting to see how their returns swing over time and whether they can successfully uncover more Almirons than Barcos.

I'm curious to see how Atlanta fares with its next set of signings. As you pointed out just above, Barco hasn't shown at the Almiron or Martinez level, at least not yet. It's possible that -- though Atlanta deserves credit for ambition and spending -- the success of their initial set of signings was a bit lucky and they might not have the ability to replicate it. This doesn't detract from your separate point that our club could show more ambition (and a looser purse) on its young signings, but even if they do, it could be a while before any MLS team has another success like the Almiron/Martinez pairing.

MLS salaries are so low they are now losing players to the general work force. Think about it. Stanford degree, 24 years old. Being in MLS doesn't really translate with the ladies like in the NBA or NFL. His current salary is only $122k. Maybe he got an offer that beats that with a nice benefit package and in a career he has a passion for. Some careers you also don't want to start in your 30's, so it was time to face reality.
