2018 General MLS Transfer Rumors

MLS salaries are so low they are now losing players to the general work force. Think about it. Stanford degree, 24 years old. Being in MLS doesn't really translate with the ladies like in the NBA or NFL. His current salary is only $122k. Maybe he got an offer that beats that with a nice benefit package and in a career he has a passion for. Some careers you also don't want to start in your 30's, so it was time to face reality.
Agree, I think college-graduate soccer players are starting to realize the 16 and 17 year olds that are coming up through academies are better than they are and have a shit ton more potential. Also, they have a backup plan with their degrees and such. Like you said, they may be receiving a better offer vs. their current MLS salary, a better deal over a longer time, or even both (better short & long term). I wouldn't be surprised if TMac pulls something similar this year or next.

According to the Athletic article by Tenorio: "Columbus will maintain a percentage of Steffen’s rights in the deal."

Not sure what this means. Do they keep his MLS rights? Or maybe it's basically a sell-on cause.

Given he's selling for more than $500,000, Steffen's name will be put on the Allocation List. Thus Columbus loses his MLS rights. It's a sell on clause.

Tenorio said that Steffen is intended as Ederson’s backup if he gets a work permit.

Who knows. Who cares. I highly doubt it.

I don’t rate Steffen other than as a serviceable MLS keeper who is capable of occasionally making a great stop.
