2018 Roster Discussion

This.

If he is so good, he should tear up USL.

My concern is that he's a dud or gets injured and then his trade value plummets.
That is a completely ungrounded take.

There are many reasons why an MLS player that plays on a USL team will potentially either shine or look dull, and it’s impossible and irresponsible to assign statistical milestone achievements in a vacuum.

In a team sport, even a great player can look bad if the level of play of their teammates cannot match theirs. Example: the best assist person imaginable may not get the assist if the player being passed to isn’t talented enough to bury the ball. That doesn’t take away the fact the pass may have been a moment of brilliance, such as when Villa spun to the endline and launched his waist level cross past the GK’s reach to a waiting Wallace who isn’t talented enough to make use of such a cross - Villa still was brilliant but he didn’t light it up because his teammate wasn’t up to the task.

Same thing can be said with getting the ball to Lewis. If his teammates can’t anticipate his runs behind the defense because they read the game slower, or more likely can’t get the pass to him in space because they have less control of their passes, then that’s limiting what Lewis can do 1v1 in space.

The flip side is that Lewis will have to tailor his passes to the level of teammates he has, and that can limit the types of balls he plays - what work’s passing to Maxi or Villa, knowing they will trap whatever comes their way, may not translate, so he’s gonna have to figure out what they can handle and how he has to adjust his game.

Also will his teammates appreciate him coming in late and displacing another guy? Hackworth wont ice Lewis out, but will his teammates pass to him? We saw Harrison had problems integrating at Middlesbrough

I think the important takeaways from the loan is whether he gets into max game shape, does he create chances (whether converted or not), and does he press / put in defensive shifts. It’s gonna be an eye test thing more than stats, which are not the end-all barometer for this short of a loan spell.

With the Lewis fan club it's never his fault and if it is he must be accommodated like changing formation so he doesn't have to play defense. If he doesn't rip it up it will certainly be because those USL scrubs couldn't provide him with the service he needed.

LMAO. I know what you mean but this takes away from the reality of the situation...

The expectations for their positions are ENTIRELY different. James hit ONE fucking pass and everyone, has crowned him the second coming of whatever. (see David Villa with the golden boy tweets)

J Lew will basically need to catch Cameron Lancaster, (who's also his teammate now so I'm sure he'll love J Lew poaching goals from his tally) add 10 assists and help the team finish ahead of Pittsburgh.

Where did I make any comparison to Sands?

Also I should have been less inflammatory with my wording, the reps are what matters and as I said earlier in the thread it's good to see we have a coach that supports loans to get our young guys important game time. As far as what he produces from a stats stand point on loan I don't think it matters especially for Lewis and the team, they know what he can do this is just about reps and staying sharp. For the fan debate it won't change anyone's mind either if he kills it the Lewis skeptics will say it was against easy USL defenders, if he doesn't score the Lewis supporters will say he didn't get service. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum of how good is Lewis every fan of this team should be happy that he is going to get a solid chunk of game time to help him continue to grow as a player.

I don't think he wants out. He needs out for his personal development though. No point in chasing ghosts here.
I have a theory that the FO wants to make certain Lewis doesn’t graduate from Generation Adidas so that either he’s a Cap freebie next year for us, or he’s got Cap value for another team in trade. The less the club plays him, even if they like what they’ve seen, the less chance he is graduated from the program.

Possible but I can't help but feel it's far more complicated than that. I have no clue what it is but there are clearly some politics involved.

It's possible. Not to go too far off topic but the structure of generation Adidas contracts that incentivizes teams to avoid playing a player is totally broken. Just make them for a set number of years.

I don't think that this is a factor at all. Jack made 19 starts and played nearly 1700 minutes in 2016 and didn't graduate. Giving Lewis some spot starts and actual minutes off the bench is not going to touch those numbers.

I'm sorry but if he's a difference maker in MLS, he should show flashes of being a difference maker in USL too. He's 21 years old. It's now or never for the kid.

May have been posted somewhere else re Medina being called up for the Paraguayan NT training camp. So much to say here.
