2018 Roster Discussion

If NYCFC end up signing Ofori how do you see the starting 11?

At this point with how little time he's seen recently with his current I'd be his arrival has no impact on the starting line up whatsoever and he's a depth signing. I'd expect him to make the bench and possibly push for a starting spot as the season progresses if he shows well in practice and sub appearances. That said if he's as good as advertised he will get starts even if he's not the first choice starter but I expect it to be in a rotation with Ring/Maxi/Herrera starting the season as the first choice starters.

Agree. I think the 3 starting midfielders are the same, but the 4th guy will get almost as many starts if prior experience holds up. That's why we need a good one.

This really pushes Tummy into irrelevance.

Starting 11 (maybe):

1. Villa
2. Medina
3. Lewis
4. Maxi
5. Yangel
6. Ring
7. Mata
8. Callens
9. Chanot
10. Tinnerholm
11. Johnson

Bench:

12. Berget
13. Wallace
14. Ofori
15. SAS
16. Hountondji
17. Sweat
18. Stuver

19. Tajouri/Sands

Who does Tummy beat out here to even make the 18 each week?

Edited bc I realized I forgot our starting keeper!

Only 4 Americans in the 18?

According to Bobby Warshaw, we won't even make the playoffs.

But I do love that we have enough players for actual roster rotation during the season, especially during the multi game weeks with travel.

That is an interesting opinion that we will not make the playoffs, especially with a stronger squad this year......

Pretty amazing to see the on-paper improvements from just one year ago. Wallace was such a big upgrade for last year's season opener and now he's a likely backup. I'm curious if we'll see Berget start out ahead of Lewis, or if they'll keep him on the bench to take over for Villa as a late sub.

Ideally the number of games we see Tommy make the bench or play this year will be dictated only by how far we make it in the US Open cup.

Ofori is primarily competition for Herrera, IMO. Expected opening day midfield stays the same until Ofori proves in training he should be out there.

I was thinking he's competition for Maxi as he sounds like more of an attack minded player than a defender. Hopefully I'm wrong because the streak of DPs sitting on our bench is getting old.

NYCFC DEPTH CHART: 2018
(assuming Ofori transfers in)

Striker/Wing: Villa, Berget
Wing/CAM: Moralez, Medina, Wallace, Lewis, Tajouri
CM: Ring, Herrera, Ofori, Sands, McNamara, Awuah
RB: Tinnerholm, Abdul-Salaam
LB: Matarrita, Sweat
CB: Chanot, Callens, Hountondji
GK: Johnson, Stuver, Rawls

Draft Picks: Paterson (D), Bumpus (D), Caldwell (GK)
Trialists: Fortune (F), Ibeagha (D), Felix (D)
Academy Players: Reyna (CAM), Haak (CM), Polvara (CM), Shaver (D), Scally (D)

What's interesting is that we really don't have many trialists or draft picks in camp - only 3 of each, and we've got at least 3 spots to fill. On the other hand, we've got 5 academy players in camp. I am going to predict at least one of those guys gets a contract.

Also, we probably most need players on defense, especially at center back. Of the 10 field players in camp hoping to catch on, 6 of them are defenders. I bet we take 2.

There's a decent argument to be made that Wallace is our best option at LW. We all know he faded badly near the end of the season, but does that mean he's demoted to backup LB? Not for me, Clive.

I said he doubles as a LB. Personally, I don’t think he starts at LW with the current options we have. But even when he’s the backup LW, he’s also the backup LB. Makes him an important part of the 18. Same with Sweat who can play CB or LB if need be.

Considering the difficulty Lewis seemed to have getting minutes last year, I don't expect him to suddenly win the job over Wallace.

But isn't Medina the LW?
