2018 Roster Discussion

At this point my only major concern is a lack of depth behind Villa. I know we have Berget, but I don't feel comfortable with literally just him should the unspeakable happen. Wallace could probably fill in as a 9 if needed, but I'd feel a lot better if we had a Mullins-esque player ready to step up if Berget turns out to be just another overhyped Scandinavian. He's apparently already injured, so whats your backup-backup plan, Claudio?

I am kind of okay with Berget there, subject to actually seeing him play.

That said, does anyone else think selling Mullins was a mistake in retrospect?

I dont remember the details, but i believe we got a solid deal for him, so I dont think selling him was a mistake. Not fully replacing him (as Villa gets deeper into his late 30's) is the mistake in my eyes.

As you said, were not sure what Berget will bring. Im hoping for the best, but Id rather have someone we know would be reliable in that spot. Someone like Alan Gordon but younger.

ETA: And then I say "someone like alan gordon but younger" and immediately think of Mullins all over again. So who knows, maybe it really was a mistake.

That’s last sentence is kind of why I keep going back on it. He’s younger; he’s American; he can play the 9. All things we need in a backup.

So, I finally went back, and the haul we got was not bad: some combination of TAM & GAM plus an international roster spot.

In the end, we have to keep in mind that he may have requested the trade so he could go someplace he would start. That was not happening in NYC, obviously.

Stylistically Mullins is not a good fit for our current system. He's a talented poacher that is good at being in the right place and finishing the chances presented to him at a high rate. He works best in a system that pairs him with a creator and provides service in from the wings. Mullins is neither a creator or a skilled target hold up player. If Villa goes down Mullins can't step in as a like for like swap or even play a hold up role that our wings play off of so you're stuck completely changing the system. As has been said trading Mullins wasn't the wrong move, the lack of a signing following the trade to fill the back up spot was. The trade was a win win for both NYCFC and Mullins, as you said the haul was decent for us and Mullins ended up on a team that plays a system much better suited to his skill set.

This is very similar to the Poku situation IMO.

Poku was a player that this team could have used the last year and a half as well. A physically imposing attack minded midfielder to help chase a goal. But he never should have started for us. Then, considering the offer we received for him, and his desire to play more minutes, selling him was the right move.

Better than Maxi. If they could pull this off, Maxi goes to the bench.

Nah, they've got similar profiles but Maxi was better last season. A straight Maxi-for-Rusnak swap would be a good deal for NYCFC for financial reasons but RSL wouldn't have much incentive to take it. Herrera's more realistic since he'd save RSL money and a DP slot and has plenty of room to grow (but then you've got CFG to consider).

Herrera is on loan. A good way to scare off future young MCFC signings to be loaned to NYCFC is to send one to Salt Lake City.

My guess is we'd be offering something more like Lewis + McNamara + extras. And RSL laughs and walks away. Maybe Matarrita or Wallace?

Albert Rusnak was a top 10 MLS player last year. Most underrated player in the league. And is just 23 years old. He ain't moving.
