Do you think NYCFC has to overpay for players to come here?

We all know the while thing any Heber being the 7th choice at striker (or whatever # that was exactly). There's a lot of reasons not to come to NYC, namely the lack of stadium that has us playing at Citi Field and RBA, and sometimes CT, St John's, etc. There's also the fact that you're playing the majority of your matches on a baseball field covered in crappy sod.

I don't don't Franco Cervi at all, but from what people are saying, he's not a $10m transfer fee DP. But maybe that's the actual cost of bringing guys here. We're not flashy like LA, Miami, or Atlanta. We're a mid table spending club who doesn't have a home of our own.

Honestly, I think playing at Yankee Stadium is a draw for overseas players. It's a world-famous stadium. The Yankees are one of the most well-known teams in the world, and I would think playing there is a draw for some of these guys, not a negative. Same for New York City - it's one of the biggest cities in the world, who wouldn't want to come prove yourself here?

I´m sorry but I´m pretty sure the Portuguese league is better than the Belgian league. It is for sure miles ahead of MLS. Miles ahead. Porto, Benfica and Sporting used to go toe to toe with the biggest clubs in Europe up until 10 or 15 years ago, winning the Champions League and everything, and they are still very competitive. Clubs from Belgium have never done than. It is true though that Pozuelo was one of the biggest stars in the Belgium league, whereas this guy is just a so-so player for Benfica. But the biggest stars coming out from the big three clubs in the Portuguese league are superstars in the 40 to 90 million range like Joao Paulo and Bruno Fernandes, etc. MLS academies are very far from producing that kind of talent, Gio Reyna being the exception. Also, guys coming from Serie A to MLS who have done great here were small role players in Serie A, like Maxi or Martinez, or permanently glued to the bench like Giovinco, so they were guys who where barely cutting it to remain in those leagues. Again, Pozuelo at Genk was the exception, so much so that the club didn´t want to transfer him initially. In sum, a guy who consistently makes the 18 for Benfica is a very promising guy for MLS´s level.

NYC for sure. Yankee stadium I highly doubt it, because you would first need to know that baseball is a big sport. In most of Europe and South America baseball does not exist at all, it is on par with ice hockey.

Our money is just as good to Benfica as any other team’s. If we have to overpay to persuade players to come here, it’ll be with the contract offer, not the transfer fee.

Any guesses from the group as to how many games we play this season at YS? Isn’t zero still a possibility if there is a no-sharing protocol. Even sans pandemic or fast forward post pandemic I think that we play just as many “home” games outside YS than in. That’s probably left out of the pitch but may be still be obvious and therefore not part of the allure. NYC allure still has some value.

Depends on how the pandemic goes, and how closely MLB is going to be forced to operate. If vaccines are coming along and cases/deaths in this country are rapidly lowering, I think it will be much easier for MLB to allow NYCFC to play at the Stadium. If not, then yes we are probably the NYC Rovers again.

As for whether we would try to play at Citi Field again, I suppose that's possible. But once we announce the Bronx location, I think the team will want to stay in the Bronx more than go out to Queens if at all possible.

I love NY as much as any NYer but I think we place way too much on the draw of NYC. I know the Knicks are a totally different animal, but every year people say "Free agents are going to come to NYC because it's NYC and the Garden" and they never get anyone. I just don't think NYC has the draw maybe it used to for players. It's expensive to live here. Taxes are high. Again, I'm not hating on NY, just coming at it from a different point of view.

in my experience at work interacting with people in south america ( at least in the countries that baseball is not played) there are those know of yankee stadium ( although the link is mostly with old yankee stadium not current one) mostly due to certain concerts/event they seen or heard about. however, they dont know a thing about baseball or any of the players.

lol what? it didnt stop harden from wanting to be here or durant/ kyrie. they playing in brooklyn but its still nyc. the lack of top free agents is more of the Knicks FO's doing more than anything imo.

Players don't come to the Knicks because the team is well-known as being perhaps the worst-run team in the league between Dolan and the front office. They don't go to the Knicks because the organization is a laughingstock, and there is too much internal BS to allow the team to compete. I do not believe that to be the case at NYCFC. I don't think we're well-run by any stretch, but players seem to have good things to say about the organization when they're here, and we seem to tend to treat players the right way.

I think we'll ultimately be happy with Cervi, however, if striker was an arguable need before, it now seems pretty important. Cervi isn't a finisher, Maxi is good not great, and we don't know who is playing RW yet, with Santiago in Uruguay until summer.

Maybe Fountas is the guy, but we need someone.

I am sure others have watched the available videos, but as others have said he looks like he is a very skillful dribbler, and seems to have the low balance and Velcro feet allowing him both to go around and through defenders. He also looks pretty tough and relentless for his size which is key in MLS. He even had a couple of nice goals with the head where he out jumped taller defenders. Maybe he’s not a true finisher but he could be electric on the wing and make life much better for his partners up front (whoever they may be). Worth the $$$ or the spot, who knows.

Based on initial impressions I'm expecting something like a Nagbe in the sense that he'll be dominant on offense but only up to the second to last pass. Great for possession, and moving the ball from wherever we recover the ball into the final third. Any contributions within the box are a bonus. With a great overlapping LB, our left side could be dominant. Just need a consistent finisher at 9 and a RW that will help too.
