Why does everyone think Pirlo needs a rest simply due to his "advanced age"? True he is not the most physical guy but it does not mean he does not have stamina or endurance. I am not disagreeing with the prevailing viewpoint but I am just pointing out we shouldn't automatically assume he gets tired more easily than the younger team members. After all, most endurance races (iron men, tri/deca-thon, 100 miles...etc) are won by folks in late 30s to mid 40s. As long as we don't demand Pirlo sprint/accelerate too much, running at constant speed is not necessarily more taxing on him than on other players. And he does seem to run at constant speed most of the game with few acceleration/outbursts (required to cut into defense or save on defense)
Pirlo's motor has a governor installed... we never have to worry about him redlining.

Every team we travel to has their best attendance with us on the field.... that alone should garner us some serious Garber Bucks.....
we are like the Yankees. People may resent us. But wherever we go, tickets sell out and they all want to come see us. it's the star power we have (both the NY reputation and the European stars we have). I hope we keep it that way. Zelatan/Messi/CR, have got to get at least one of them

Here is my preview of tomorrow's match against Toronto. Trying to preview a match in which you have no idea who is going to play is a bit of a challenge. I also got into how I think Frank helps if he is actually, truly healthy - curious to hear some thoughts on that once you dis-entangle it from the question of whether he's been a disaster of a DP signing (clearly he has).

Just give him a double espresso while everyone else is blowing smelling salt packets and he'd be good to go.
He drinks a double espresso before bed. I think he can handle somethings stronger.

Toronto fans are pumped right now between the new stadium, league MVP and a winning team.
Luckily our record against our collective neighbors to the North is pretty one-sided. Those Toronto fans are due for a major letdown.

He might hit the crossbar just enough times that it actually bends backwards a few inches, allowing Pirlo to later get a free kick on net that would have otherwise sailed over.
I will readily concede that I hadn't thought of that one. Not sure Pirlo has been close enough to make the few extra inches count, but here's hoping we get one of his trademark free kicks before he leaves NY.

We have actually had fairly few fouls that present good free kick opportunities this year. Not sure whether there is a reason for that or if it is just random.

I think it's a result of using wingers and having more pressure near the box than we had last year with just Villa. Either way, we lined Pirlo up in Portland maybe 25 yards out, and he proceeded to pass it across the face of the box, eventually resulting in absolutely nothing. Can't say I wasn't upset about that one. If we can get just one Pirlo free kick golazo i'll pee myself. Drogba's been showing him up big time.

So, here is a thing.

David Villa has 26 goals in 41 games. He has scored half of those goals - 13 in total - against Canadian teams. He's done that in just 9 games, and he scored a brace in 5 of those 9.

It would be great to find the right nickname to commemorate his effective attacks on all things Canadian. I was considering the Richard Montgomery of MLS - after the Revolutionary War general who led the invasion of Canada, including winning battles at Ft. Saint John's and Montreal, but alas, he perished at the siege of Quebec.

I think he was farther out than that. I remember thinking it seemed a little too far out for a quality shot on goal.

I can't think of having an opportunity this year as good as some of the ones Villa hit last year, or as good as we gave up against New England, Toronto or twice against Portland.

Mullins, Mena, Martinez, Gomez, Taylor, Lampard, Brandt, Harrison

Total time played in last five matches = 0 minutes

Poku hasn't played in the last 4 matches.

Including guys injured, or coming off injuries, in your list is like saying Vieira has played zero minutes this year.

This has to make you feel good about our depth because there are several guys on that list that I like.

Martinez likely gets two starts on 5/29 and 6/2, assuming he plays okay against Orlando. Mena, who I really liked coming into the season, is so buried at this point, he is going to need an injury (or three) to get in there.

Mullins needs to really seize any opportunity he gets. Taylor needs to hope Harrison either can't over the fitness hump or isn't quite as ready as we all hope, because otherwise he has become the fifth winger on this team. I continue to be surprised that he is carrying Taylor in the 18 and not Mullins, though I know there have been unconfirmed rumors of issues with Mullins.
