All very valid points, BW, but remember that the OP posted to point out that this is not just something a few fans are asking not to happen, this is a concrete restriction placed on us by the club, the league and the broadcasters. We can debate it all we want, but coming to a consensus that swearing in football songs is "acceptable" will not change the fact that we are not allowed to do so.

I will be the first person to advocate for swearing in chants. The fact of the matter is that MLS is not a solidifies league like MLB, NFL, or EPL. It is still growing and it is trying to establish itself. This is just a matter of appeasing the TV networks and the sponsors. If they were more established and had sponsors knocking their doors down, then this wouldn't be an issue.
Not really. Or I should say not explicitly. You can't stop 60k fans screaming BULLSHIT. But then again, the fan culture is very different. It is a lot of structured chants based on what the home team is doing. There are a lot of breaks of play.
Obviously I live in manchester,and I can assure you swearing is common even in the family stand,things can get very heated from time to time depending who we are playing.
How is the MLS going to stop a few thousand people from swearing during songs?
Will they deduct points? Will they fine the club? Make you play a game behind closed doors?.....genuine questions,I don't know how the MLS would react..

What's the take on smoke bombs and flares like?.....quite common over here,although they are banned.

To be honest, I do not know what the repercussions are. For the YSA chant, I believe, they fined the club and the clubs threatened to disband the supporter sections. Please tell me if I got anything wrong.
As for smoke bombs and flares, we are in discussions with the club to see what is permitted. If it were up to them, they would allow it, but the issue is that we are renting space at Yankee Stadium. That is where the negotiation is. We hope to have an answer on that soon.
The issue is that since football is not the most popular sport here, the league is trying to market itself to the tv networks and has to look as clean as possible. If the league was more established and popular, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't care if we cursed
I think all of this goes down to the FCC who tell TV stations what they can and can't do. I do not intend this thread to turn into a "Well blowing someone's head off is fine but say 'shit' or show a nipple and all hell breaks loose" discussion, but that essentially what it amounts to.
This rule has been standard operating procedure in MLS for some time now. There are certain applications that are ironclad and certain ways where the line can be pushed. YSA is definitely a hard no and there was a serious push a couple of years ago across many teams to stamp it out. But in other cases, I expect some leniency and that we will be able to push the line on this as we go.

I would't be the least surprised if flares (and possibly smoke) are banned in NYC as per the Fire Dept..
Student groups in college football get cracked down a lot for the same reason (it doesn't play well on TV). Since the chants are sung along to a song played by a marching band, the recourse usually is to stop playing that song. College sports have plenty of sponsors, but because, as it seems to be in all sports, TV money is the king, the chants go.
I was at a Yankee/Red Sox game earlier this year, in the bleachers. I kid you not when I say I was threatened with ejection for saying BOSTON SUCKS. They are clamping down hard

Swearing isn't something the authorities are bothered about here, as it's so trivial.
It wasn't so long ago there were mass riots between supporters every week.
I suppose it's good for the families but it never did me any harm as a kid going
to football.

I've stood for the entire 90 minutes of every game, for the 7 years I've been
in my current seat, at MCFC.
There's about 3/4 thousand that do at one end of the stadium every game.
