Nycfc Sign Diego Martinez

Our best bet would be to trade him and allocation money to offload his contract.

No ones taking that contract.

Edit: Did we use our buy out? Doesn't every MLS team get 1 free buy out per season? or did I dream that.

That's why I said we would have to provide allocation money to rid the team of his contract.

We have not used it, to whatever extend you trust information posted by MLS.

But it is an option. See III.D here: http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/content/roster-rules-and-regulations
Why oh why would we EVER let that wonderful rule go unused each year???? It's like a damn Get Out Of Jail Free card from Monopoly. It's the Golden Do-Over of Do-Overs, otherwise known as a Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan , and we should be excited to use it each year..... It's our very own Teddy KGB pink slip..... Pay Him, Pay that man his Money!

Ugh.... Wingert was absolutely lost as a CB......
Hopefully he gets more comfortable at that role with more playing time. He doesn't have the physical ability to bomb up the sideline anymore that we need if we going to some type of 433.

Regardless, this has to be his last year with the club.

With no real basis for this except that it fits (some of) the (public) facts and makes sense (at least to me) I've been assuming we used it on Grabavoy. This is inconsistent with the public statement that NYCFC chose not to exercise his contractual option. I presume, in my imagined scenario, that we did this to be nice because not exercising an option to renew sounds better than using the option to buy out. It would not be the first time NYCFC and MLS lied about a contract situation. It would in fact be the third time by my count. But I would not hold this one against them if it is the case (nor do I blame them for George John).

I certainly cannot think of any reason we would not have used the buy out on one of the other remaining players otherwise, but I really have no other evidence for these musings.

To be fair, I haven't heard another team use this this offseason. Maybe we used it and just didn't have to tell anyone.

Great signing. At first, it can be a bit of a head-scratcher at first coz we just signed Mataritta, but adding more speed and youth to our wings is an A grading for me. Keep in mind that Matarrita is a full international now and will be expected to miss games for us. Martinez I'm sure will be getting some meaningful minutes this season.

With this signing, PV and the FO has remained true to its vision this offseason of making our team more athletic, younger, and faster. Let's keep the momentum going.

A tall, physical CB signing should be around the corner. Can't wait see what the team has in store for us.

This. I was excited to see Lampard play as an 8 in our exhibition game. I would prefer to have Mix as the other guy next to Pirlo and Poku as the "1" in that formation. We actually have the right players to play that way. Our link up play could be beautiful. Play Shelton next to Villa and utilize their speed. Just hope Shelton can finish!
Dude, stop trying to start Shelton. He's fast and looks cool. But he needs mop up minutes for a while.

Hopefully my ass. I hope I never see him in the 18. Fucking garbage player who cost us multiple games.

It'll depend on his development during the offseason as well as the preseason. The potential is there, so can PV and his staff develop him properly?

I think Shelton deserves more than mop up minutes this season.I believe this season he has the potential to be an influential asset off the bench with his pace. Possibly even a few spot starts if our team is struggling or PV is looking at different formations/strategies depending on the opponent. It's too soon to write off Khiry.

The awkward thing about that is there's no wide midfielder in a 4-3-3. Maybe a 4-2-3-1 again? (EDIT: Matarrita is listed as a forward on the nycfc.com roster page....)

I think it's clear they are just going to assemble the best available players, let Vieira figure out the team identity, and then cull again and reinforce in year 3.
Vieira said at the fan meeting in midtown we'd play a 4-3-3
