Forgot to mention: Anyone thinking Brillant looked really slow vs. Accam hasn't watched MLS enough to know that Accam is probably the fastest player in the league and makes everyone look like that. If his positioning is fine, there are only a few players in the league that can get around him, Accam being one of them. The bumble in the back is usually a blip where you get caught off-balance and you're looking down at the ball -- probably why he was surprised to see a player on him at once.

I'm not getting all the love for Mattarita. His skill is obvious; but for me he got forward way too much, leaving big gaps in in the back.

Mattarita seemed to spend almost the entire game in the attacking half. When the left back is consistently higher up than Pirlo, something is askew. This was happening even when we were trying to protect a slim one-goal lead.

But I guess that this amounts to a complaint with the manager more than with the player. If Vieira wants Mattarita to get forward so much and to play such a big part in the attack, then he should play him in midfield, and put someone at left back who wants to defend.

I am glad we won, of course. But we can attribute that mainly to playing a team that was even worse at the back than we were, and a team whose best attacking player had to leave at the half due to injury.

Also, we got the benefit of a couple of bad calls; there were two penalties that we got away with, until we were called for one that was never a penalty.

The game was fun to watch, but not a great advertisement for the league (referring both to players and referees). I was happy to see great moments for McNamara, Mix, and Shelton, and also for Saunders. But this display honestly did not fill me with confidence for when we face better opposition.

Let's credit our squad, btw, for beating a team that was as much of a matchup nightmare as possible. Accam is effing good.

Last year Chicago was one of the few teams that gave RBNY issues. Their speed is impressive. We shouldn't think the sky is falling because they beat us over the top. That can be cleaned up.

Who's doubting Mix? He played great. He was whoscored.com's MOTM.

Mix had six total tackles and wasn't dispossessed once. His pass completion was a little low at 73.6%, but overall he commanded the midfield. McNamara was the better distributor today, with a 93% pass completion rate and four key passed (t-1st with Villa). Both were excellent, and if name and salary weren't factors, Lampard would have to earn his spot from them.

Oh my. Mix hater badge for you. He was about the only grit (and a significant portion of any quality) we had last year.

Hmm I just felt like he drifted in and out of games last year. I love the guy, but I don't think it's unreasonable to feel like the idea/concept of Mix was far better than the reality. Whether that was down to him, or down to the tactics we employed will become clearer this season, but he looked great today, and I think we're all pulling for him in this new system.

More from the stat sheet, here's why our offense is going to cause nightmares this year:

Shelton - 3 shots, 1 goal
Taylor - 3 shots, 1 goal
McNamara - 3 shots, 1 goal
Mix - 3 shots, 1 goal
Villa - 3 shots
Matarrita - 3 shots
Pirlo - 2 shots

The attack can come from anywhere and everywhere on any given day.

I prefer Lurch start, but I credit Saunders with one change and improvement. There were 2-3 instances where Chicago sent a ball over the top and had a runner streaking to our goal. Last year Saunders waits for the play to come to him and Chicago scores. Today he ran outside the 18-yard box, reached the ball before the Chicago player did and boomed it downfield. It was like watching coaching in action. "They said this would happen. This is what I do. Hey look, it works!"

But still, Johansen next game please.

The speed caught them off guard. Either lack of scouting, underestimated speed, blown assignments or all of the above.

RE: Matarrita – that's the system we play. 4-3-3 becomes 3-4-3 in attack.

Matarrita is a great fit for this system because he produces going forward and has the lungs to get back if the left-sided center back can hold the counterattack. I understand where you're coming from because you see us undermanned on those counters but there's no way we produce 61% possession, 20 shots from all over the field and 4 goals by playing a flat 4 and conceding midfield.

Hell, even stodgier teams that sit and try to counter don't keep their defenses flat on attack anymore. It's football for a bygone era.

What screwed our backline was having Hernandez who hasn't played at all with first team in there and White playing RB when he should of been at CB. When actually both should of been on the bench and Mena in there and Iraola/RJ at RB.
Our backline looked solid in preseason while our front looked shaky and couldn't finish. Opposite today.

Shelton looked good in the preseason. I remember at the Tampa Montreal game I sat with Albany_NYCFC and we talked about how direct he was. Running at defenders and not afraid to take a shot outside the box. He's really matured. Showed his strength today and he used his big size to create space on the ball. Very impressed.

i like that offensively we have other options to score and that helps.....i know the team is still prone to get hit in counters but i do think the defense shall improve .....im still iffy on hernandez though. this whole playing from the back still needs work and now that one goal was given up thru a mistake many other teams will try to attach us this way.

again time to improve and fix the kinks....

also whats up with PV not using the three subs...well see....i really felt team was getting tired at around min 80.
