Timbers Postmatch

My perspectives on the game:

- There is nothing insightful about this comment, but Villa really is playing at a transcendent level in the last 3-4 matches. I just wonder how long he can keep it up physically.

- Even though the goal against came in the second half, I thought we were much better. The first half had some great individual defending, but we gave up a lot of good chances. I took comfort from the fact that they weren't the result, generally, of comic defending but rather just a good opponent, but, on another day, we could have been down 2-0 or something. I think we got paid back by some of the karma gods who had killed us in a few of our early matches if you believe that stuff. Second half, and particularly the last 30 minutes, was much better. It is the second match in row where I thought we did a great job of nursing a hard-won lead.

- I've been pretty critical of what Lopez costs us offensively when he plays further up the field and was hoping that this was a match where Mix would distinguish himself and give us better ball retention and/or chance creation that would help re-establish him. I didn't really see it, though, and may, reluctantly, be coming around to the view that I'd rather have the extreme Lopez pressure and running rather than Mix's all-around game which just isn't shining in my opinion. Not sure yet though, and the right choice may depend on the matchup. I thought Mikey was very good defensively and was a lot more disciplined than I expected, but that his lack of passing ability also hurt our ability to keep the ball. Getting Bravo back in there is key.

- I thought a big part of us managing the match well in the second half was good work by Pirlo. He really took the air out of the game in a number of instances, which was exactly what we needed. And the attention he drew before laying the ball off to TMAC for the goal was very important.

- I did not think Brillant, who I am generally a big fan of, was all that good, though I'd need to watch the match again and without a very high level of anxiety to form a better view. And, in fairness, Adi is a tough matchup for sure.

- The difference between the light-weight defending we had at FB last year with Iraola and Angelino and what we get out of Allen and Matarrita, both of whom are a bit nasty and have attitudes, is night and day.

- Overall, it was a good match and fantastic outcome, though it is easy to conflate the two. For me, the exciting part is that, perhaps for the first time, we were able to go play away from home, against a tough opponent, and do enough to put ourselves in a position to win thanks to some moments of individual skill. It won't always turn out that way, but against Columbus and Philadelphia, we never really had the chance. If you do that consistently in your tough road matches and play like we did against Montreal and Vancouver at home, and DC in road matches against mediocre teams, you are a very good MLS team.

12 clearances for Brillant, 11 in the box.

This, totally, 100 times. It's kind of mystifying to me that people don't see this sort of thing as utterly important to wins. That tiny little dink from Pirlo to McNamara, with Pirlo not even looking at him so as to not draw the defenders' attention, that was pure brilliance. And he does that sort of thing all the time. Not to mention tying up defenders who have to stay with him just to make sure he doesn't do things like that who might otherwise be marking other players of ours.

Exactly. And Pirlo had two guys closing him down and did that no-look, side-footed chop to the guy that one of them should have been marking. Goal.

Good data. My impression was that he seemed to get "wrong-sided" a number of times but, like I said, I formed that viewed while watching intently and hadn't yet gone back and focused on him specifically or, as you point out, looking at the data.

I'm a big Brillant fan either way and still think Ethan White getting scratched earlier in the season and Brillant coming in was a really fortunate turn of events.

On this note, I wonder if Timbers started to relax a bit after scoring their goal? I thought they also outplayed us in the beginning of the second half prior to scoring, as well as having many better chances in the first.

But after they scored and then Adi was subbed out, I thought we outplayed them in the second. I don't necessarily think Adi subbing out was the reason for the change in play, but moreso Portland may have just relaxed a bit more after tying and didn't keep pressing as much.

No matter how many matches I watch, I often find it difficult to put my finger on exactly why the flow of a match changes at a particular point, but it definitely felt like it did here.

Definitely helping us having a consistent backline. They seem much more comfortable absorbing pressure. The playing out of the back.. Not so much yet
RJ's pass made up for rest of the game by the entire defense.

Since most of the important points have been covered well, here are some random thoughts about last night.

Hearing and seeing the Timbers crowd made me think to myself several times how fucking brilliant this beautiful sport is.

It seemed that the Timbers were coached up on how to play Khiry, jockey from a greater than usual distance and give him space to do anything he wants other than use his speed. It was effective.

I will never get bored watching Pirlo do his super slow-motion shielding and cut backs with the ball. It’s almost like the big kid who uses his extended arm to shield off the little kid who is hopelessly trying to land punches. And it has become so easy to get used to his passes many of which looked so ordinary last night, but they were actually pretty extraordinary.

It is clear that PV is carefully and critically making personnel decisions, both pre-game and in-game. I haven’t scratched my head about any (or most) of them. I thought that the Mehdi and White subs were perfect, especially Mehdi. A Poku substitution would have been the wrong move, AINEC.

I think that it is great that we have so many guys who could/should arguably be in the 18. Depth is huge in MLS for all of the obvious reasons, and our bench and beyond are strong by MLS standards. That should help us immensely over the season.

Big shout-out to our folks who traveled to the game. That’s a big trip, and we appreciate your representing.

With our personnel, formation, and game plan, we will continue to give up a lot of chances. Like last night, we will have no choice but to rely on some bad misses by our opponents, some big saves like Saunders made, and some desperate defensive saves like we saw from Hernandez and Mata. The tense and frightening moments will be unavoidable, but I love it.

We are starting to get that “little bit of luck” you sometimes need to win games, whether it’s questionable calls, good bounces, etc. We will be on the wrong end, but it seemed that we were almost always on the wrong end until our recent run.

I'm not a huge Ballouchy fan, but I also thought it was a great sub. And as an edit to this, I really didn't understand some of PV's subs the first few games, but lately I feel like he's been nailing the subs on the head.

Does anyone know what we did from a formation standpoint once Iraola came on? I wasn't paying particular attention to that as I was just too excited/nervous about taking 3 points. Kinda curious as to what what we did there as we ended up having one LB, 3 CBs and 2 RBs on the field at the same time as well as a DMid.

I think we call it "all hands on deck". Actually, if memory serves, it was White at RB, Allen at LB and Matarrita pushed up the pitch a bit. Could be wrong though.

I agree on Ballouchy. The one time you want to use him is when you are trying to kill off a game and avoid silly passes and turnovers. Earlier in the season, he brought him on when we were chasing games, which was frustrating, particularly since he was playing deep. But, he is a good, safe pair of hands when you want to kill off the match. That was a good sub.

I had my doubts about bringing Pirlo off on the final change, just because Mata had been hobbling for a while and Hernandez and Brillant both stayed down for a bit right before the change was made.

Glad it worked out, wondering if any of our backline is going to get some rest against Toronto or RB.

Every time I watch the replay I see it hit his stomach and does not come into contact with his arms.
It hits his stomach and goes up/forward then defender gets in the way and the ball is going a different direction (straight down) it hit his arm and the referee said it did but it was not intentional and they didn't call it a handball. His arm was still at his side and the ball hit it.

Another thing to note is that this replay was shown in Portland and thus the fans were booing tremendously. NYCFC never shows controversial calls on either team at home. I thought it was a league rule that replays of controversial calls could not be shown on the jumbotron. Apparently not.

And PV was rightfully pissed.

i thought they do that so as to not shame the ref on bad calls. I mean they are human and try to make the right calls, so why bring that shit storm down on them when they don't have too. I didn't think it was a rule but more so etiquette.
