Timbers Postmatch

Their supporters and the drums really impressed me -- first of all, their drums are huge and, as you pointed out, they have a lot of them. I thought there would be issues staying in sync but they were very impressive. Maybe our supporter group leaders should reach out to them for advice.

Something else that stood out to me was the pre-game atmosphere (which I've noticed at other stadiums as well, particularly the Sounders). The crowd is already in a frenzy and very very loud before the players even take the field. Then when the teams march out the crowd pushes it to another level. This is what we should aspire to -- I remember last year Kreis said something about how at RSL the players in the locker room pregame could hear their supporters chanting/singing and it really set the tone for the home match before it even started. I've noticed that most of our supporters aren't even in the supporters sections prior to the anthem. We have a long way to go but I'm sure things will get better.
All the things you say are true, but to me it's not a "fault" of the supporters but more that Yankee Stadium is sort of hostile territory. I'm certainly not a "we must have no rules" sort of anarchist guy but the supporters are treated like suspected delinquents at school rather than being treated like the heart and soul of the club. I mean, 10 flags for 25,000 fans?!?!? It's like we're a guest in our own home, and not even an honored guest. We're tolerated, barely, instead of really welcomed by the Yankees. And that attitude in our hosts totally shows in the attitude of the crowd.

We need our own stadium. And not because we will then have no rules because the rules will be the same. But even with rules, we'll be comfortable in our own home rather than being a not-really-welcome guest.

Their drums reminded of the goblin drums beating in the mines of Moria in LOTR. I was intimidated by those drums watching on TV.
Do you know if the drums and supporters are under a roof? If so, the roof adds a ton to projecting the sound out into the stadium as opposed to straight up at YS in the bleachers.

Also loved how intimate the field was to the stands when the camera panned to the corners. Portland truly made the best of a baseball stadium conversion.

Unfortunately for us, the ones with drums in our stands have zero rhythm. They can't keep a beat for much longer than 10 seconds.
I think it's also that the ones with our drums have egos and are more eager to be a separate group than part of the whole.

Hearing and seeing the Timbers crowd made me think to myself several times how fucking brilliant this beautiful sport is
Timber Jerry is the most amazingly insane awesome idea... Have a lumberjack fire up a chainsaw and rip a slice off of a log whenever the team scores a goal? How can you not love that?

But as I said at the time,

TIMBER JERRY AIN'T GOT NO CHICKEN BUCKET

It's the most amazing idea until a piece of shrapnel wood goes flying into the stands and pokes an eye out.

I hate to be that guy... But his name is Timber Joey...

It's amazing how good Villa is at holding off a defender that is considerable larger than him just long enough to finish. Very similar finish as the goal from last year when Prilo put the ball over the top and Villa split two defenders to get to it.

So true..He is so good at muscling his way through tight spaces like that. It shows just how good he really is.

Pretty cool video on the Timbers Army.

They pretty much set the standard in MLS. Hell, they could compete with some euro supporters groups when it comes to gametime atmosphere.

Helps a lot that they have a nice compact stadium. Kind of reminds me of what Craven Cottage is with the stands' intimacy and adjacency to the field.

The only thing I don't understand, is why anybody would want to be a capo? They miss so much of game with their backs turned while leading the chants. I guess that's a thrill, but I'd rather watch the play on the field.

Yeah that's just funny -- there are much worse things they could chant to kids that would legitimately upset the PC police.
I think it also fits with their enchanted forest theme of the Timbers.

There were some quiet patches, but overall we played well - more good team structure in there.

Hernandez has been an unsung hero this season with the amount of blocks he's had.
What a match! Best defensive performance yet, Hernandez was a beast. Both goals were amazing. We look like a contender ... I am AMPED for the Derby!!!!!

i can't stop watching that TMac goal. Just stunning.
Would have loved to see Poku come in instead of Ballouchy...and probably Mendez for Shelton at some point... Little dissappointed with the subs.
It's good to be high in the SKY BLUE!!
Best win of NYCFC in MLS. No doubt in my mind.
Hernandez and Saunders kept us in it.
Allen with the through-ball of the year to Villa, fired us up.
Pirlo with a clutch assist, to Tommy Mac for a laid-back golazo.

What a win.

Happy birthday to me.

What else can I say? All been said by all of you guys! Even if i did not quoted you all are included

I share everyones sentiment
Go, go to our boys in blue.

I was reading the recap and commentary from the Timbers fans about the game, and apparently Diego Valeri's nickname is "Maestro?" It made for some very confusing reading. I kept thinking they were talking about a certain Italian

So I finally watched the match. I was on the edge of my seat most of the match!

-Wow Saunders made some really nice saves but he was REALLY out of position a few times and it almost cost us.

-RJ Allen's ball to Villa was so good it made me forget about the god awful ball he played back to Saunders that almost cost us a road win. Good thing that ball was to Villa and not to Shelton.

-Hernandez was such a beast

-Tommy Mac doesn't look like a soccer player but HE ABSOLUTELY IS ONE

-I'm so sick of watching Shelton dribble 1 vs 3. Why why why why why

-Imagine not liking Andrea Pirlo.

That's true and that was part of why Portland was so impressive, particularly during the pregame/opening minutes of the match -- the entire stadium was taking part. Also, let's keep in mind that it was cold and pouring rain during most of that match. For me, that just adds to the impressiveness of those Timbers supporters.

They are quiet until the players come out to warm up then quiet until maybe 5/6 mins before the starting XI comes out. STILL they go all out for the full 90 and it sounds great and very well coordinated

It was a fantastic experience in the stadium and Us 50 or so that we're there we chanted as much and as loud as we could for the majority of the game. I think you hear in the replay of tmac's goal us chanting really loud "tommy Mac"

Oh don't know if this was mentioned but all of a sudden we started chanting to some timbers fans that were throwing banter our way. real loud: " you got grabavoy" clap clap... clap clap clap

Btw those portland fans are awesome many came up to us to congratulate us and shook hands and some even bought us a few drinks afterwards....Portland is awesome place and very friendly people at least in my experiences in this trip

That's a supporter culture I could get behind. Chant about eating kids. Banter back and forth about the game. But smile and realize it's a game in the end.

I'd love our SS to have the Timbers energy for 90+ minutes. But even more I'd love for us to have their attitude. No more stealing scarves, beating up other fans, throwing stuff (ala Philly game).

Makes me look forward to next year when Portland visits us. I want to go buy beers for their whole section. LionNYC LionNYC can I charge that to your account?
