Orlando might be better than people think. They added Spector - which is an important piece to shore up a bad defense. They still have Larin and Kaka. The key will be to keep those guys healthy.

Father Time..... every year he will slow a little bit more and every year the physical abuse he suffers will add up. That hypothetical kick to the calf that was shrugged off last year develops scar tissue and the same kick this year adds more scar tissue and longer to go away. He'll still be a handful, but teams are learning to bully him and even a young, super athletic body wears down.

A more proactive approach (aside from kicking him) is to maintain possession and don't give him the opportunity to plant the dagger.

Look at this. He's already a full year older than he was yesterday. He's aging rapidly.

Well, all good points except that:
1. Villa does not seem to get the same level of abuse as Giovinco, so hopefully he isn't a walking wounded.
2. Villa has been pacing himself since year one by walking a lot during games while being frustrated with his service. now if he starts getting amazing service and can never take a walking break, that's when I'll start to worry.
3. Add a half dozen goals to the goal via PK.
Good stuff. I agree on 1 that he doesn't seem to get kicked as much as Giovinco. Not sure on 2. Would be interesting to see the distance run data. Gio does a lot of walking himself!

Agree on 3, though I discount PK goals very heavily because, in my mind, the incremental conversion rate between Villa and whoever else would take our PKs is probably not that high as compared to the incremental value he offers in terms of creating and converting open field scoring chances.

Jason Kreis can't coach an Eastern Conference team...

I'd put it as Jason Kreis can't coach a team with which he hasn't already established himself as a player such that he's respected to the point where his crappy attitude is tolerated.

And then there's father China. Ignoring self-interest and preferring what's best for MLS, I hope that his agent is bluffing or Gio has the will power (0r the bank account) to turn down a bloated offer.

Orlando actually has a very solid squad this year in addition to Larin and Kaka, too. Higuita has been sought out by a lot of European teams and Nocerino should be solid with a full preseason. And as much as we hate him, Shea is a decent player.

The East will be very competitive this year. Chicago is a playoff team especially if they sign a DP IMO

I don't currently see us improving on last year relative to the rest of the league.
IF we improve this year relative to the rest of the league (and I voted for 55-59), it will be because of three things.
  1. Our second half this year is comparable to our second half last year or possibly even better with a crack DP signing boosting our last few months.
  2. Our horrible start last year sees a normal start for us this year. (First historic year without a double digit winless streak starting with game 2 of the season.)
  3. Our coach, who is still early and therefore in the steep part of his learning and growth curve, gets significantly better relative to the rest of the year.

When they won in 2009, they were a crappy seed right? Kreis gets credit like Porter should get credit. But that's it.

This. Both prior years NYCFC went into the toilet early on in the season (with blowing all those home games early last year led to a 'zero percent chance' that they would make the playoffs). Stay competitive in the first half until DP3 comes in and improve towards the back end of the season. Grab a 3/4 seed and roll to MLS cup. The team is younger now so the "geriatrics can't play 3 games in a week" shouldn't apply anymore.

I hope we're still saying this in year 20 for anything and everything just as we do nowadays in year 3.

"Hi everyone, this is Joe Tolleson along with color commentator Mix Diskerud and we just wanted to let you know that the official NYCFC First Historic Year of Our 20th Anniversary t-shirts will go on sale at Yankee Stadium on opening day..."

I hope those tshirts come with the first historic stadium update.

That would be the First Historic former-player-who-was-ostracized-then-wrote-tell-all-coming-back-to-be-color-commentator telecast.

Why was there no option for 70+ or 80+ points?

This is preseason before we've finished signing all of our players, the time for raw, rabid, and reasonless optimism. I want to express my fandom by giving completely unrealistic point totals and saying were about to sign Messi.

Reasonable sober analysis is for when the roster is done, not now.

That up or down?

Up. I was originally in the same total as last year. I think this team has upgraded though and we have depth now to squeak out points when we have those crazy stretches of 5 games in 14 days.

Plus, in the thirty minute sample size I saw of Villa and Moralez last night, I think k they have the potential to form a deadly partnership. Not to mention an improved and more mature Jack.

Even if Seattle gets Honda? And who wins the USOC? Looks like we can make CCL that way, if they don't change the qualification for the next couple of years to line things up.
