2017 Roster Discussion

He's not a DP.

Because MCFC paid his transfer fee, it's not factored into his loan. NYCFC just have to pay his salary, if it's below the threshold hen he's not a DP.

This is very interesting for us because the chatter when we first came into the league was that any man city loanee would have to be a DP except the four eds loanees we could have. Very positive development.

Wait, who said he was a DP?

There was *allegedly* a large transfer fee but if he's on loan they just have to pay his full salary. If that's below DP Threshold then his transfer fee doesn't matter at all.
Transfermarkt values Herrera at €400,000 (about $423,000 US). Without a transfer fee, then probably under the max salary?

I don't think it's that they would have to be a DP. Just posted this in the Yangel Herrera to NYCFC thread, regarding whether the loans have to come with a buy clause:
Does that apply to loanees from Man City? I was never really clear on what exactly it meant that we could take up to four on loan

Based on the limited info I've seen, it's just that NYCFC can't circumvent the salary cap/max salary rules by getting loans on the cheap from MCFC, e.g., they couldn't loan us Demichelis at under the max salary. If they are going to loan to us (whether it's EDS or first team), the league scrutinizes it

Well, we haven't had the rest of the league dump their thoughts on us yet. Remember how pissed other teams fans were when we tried signing Jack as a homegrown? Someone will see this as "cheating," and im not sure if id blame them yet.

I'm not anti signing a 19 year old kid and dropping him into the thick of things. Following Everton (and now Man City because of our link) the past few years - Stones, Tom Davies, Ross Barkley, Lukaku, Brendan Galloway, Mason Holgate, Ademola Lookman have all broken through as teenagers and made a major impact.

If this kid was the captain of his U-20 team, he must be a decent player. My concern always with MLS is how physical the league is. Not for everyone.

So with Maxi in NYC basically signed, and Herrera finalized, can we officially say it was an impressive offseason of acquisitions if everything comes to fruition? Had to deal with losing Lampard's goal production and losing our first choice CDM, so we responded with:
1. Bold moves in the draft with Lewis and Awuah. Added youth and pace.
2. Potential Box to Box MF in Ring and an option in the MF and on the wing in Camargo. Okoli gives us another option up front.
3. Resigning RJ and TMac. Whatever role they play this year, two awesome guys to have on your roster
4. Experienced MLS Keeper in Johnson
5. Yangel Herrera, whose only downfall we see right now is inexperience, which can certainly be improved
6. An experienced 29 year old in Maxi who could step in with goal production on day one and take some pressure off of Villa
7. AND holding onto Matarrita for at least the meantime.

Maybe even a big name in the summer? Viera promised us an entertaining product, and it really seems to me like this is going to be a fun season.

And we could still sign our first HGP.

For real though, are some of the old stalwarts like TMac and RJ ever going to see the field if we don't keep competing in the US open cup?

And Mikey Lopez is left off because of injury. Picking an 18 is going to be hard...

Villa, McNamara, Harrison, Maxi?, Pirlo, Ring, Matarrita. Brillant, Callens, Chanot, Johnson...

Do we have to put Norris in there at all? Cant we just freeze him out? I dont think he "fits our system" aka a soccer team.

Let's look at what went out and what has come back.

DP: OUT Lampard <- No replacement yet
CM: OUT Ballouchy -> IN Ring - should be substantial improvement
CB: OUT Hernandez -> IN Callens - should be improvement
CB: OUT Mena <- IN ???? - likely to be a trialist; unlikely to be as good as Mena, but not critical at 4th CB position
FB: OUT Martinez - IN ???? - likely to be a trialist; can't be any worse given Martinez's lack of playing time
CDM: OUT Iraola - IN Herrera - giving up experience for youth, potentially better, but we will see
CDM: OUT Bravo <- IN ???? - likely to be a trialist; unlikely to be better
F: OUT Taylor -> IN Okoli - potential for improvement
F: OUT Mendoza - IN Lewis - should be a wash for 2017, but potential improvement long term
GK: OUT Saunders -> IN Johnson - should be substantial improvement

I don't see Chanot playing anywhere other than CB.
