2017 Roster Discussion

Which makes sense, frankly. All of these acquisitions cost money. Ring cost a lot of money, Callens and Wallace cost some money -- those guys aren't cheap. If they knew all offseason Mix would somehow not be there on March 5, it would have been a dereliction of duty to not use that money elsewhere during the winter window.

I kind of had a feeling that was how they were signing all these players -- the guys they released this winter were mostly not terribly high-priced players (aside from Iraola, Hernandez, and Lampard), so it made sense they would use thier TAM this way.

Precisely. Once the Club knew it was going to exercise the buyout if it came to that, it was going to spend the cap savings right away. If you know the money will be available, there's no need to wait. I am a little surprised people weren't expecting this all along.

I wonder if nycfc is using the fund like they have already theoretically cut mix. Like we signed ring callens etc with the money we will have from getting rid of mix. If not then damn we can add some more quality in the summer

Rosters have to be league compliant the day before the first game of the MLS season. With Mix and all the new signings on our books, surely we're not unless we have boatloads of GAM and TAM hidden in some safe in Abu Dhabi.

The front office is going to buyout Mix before that date so the buyout doesn't count on the salary books (it will count on the overall financial statements). It's the only way, reasonably, for the roster to work. Unless some crazy transfer or trade happens but that's extremely unlikely.

Does anyone have an up to date salary cap analysis of the roster. I know it's impossible because we don't know what players saw increases from previously posted salary, what the new players count against the cap as, GAM/TAM etc. but I wonder how over we can be right now.

If I have a minute today I'll fudge something.

If this is what it looks like: buyer's remorse, and the wealthy front office has blacklisted, cajoled and pressured a 27 year old kid to let them out of a contract they don't like, they are shitstains.

NYCFC needs to let the league/players union known a minimum of two days before the start of the season. So we should expect a leak around march 2nd or we should know on march 4th, if NYCFC's front office and the league are really that leak proof.

The dick move here isn't doing it. The dick move is not just doing it by the end of the year. Maybe they offered a discounted payout for it, and he wouldn't take it. Who knows.

But waiting until the last minute to do it once January windows closed is shitty and reasonable and predictable.

And before anyone gets on anyone else about being a bad fan of the club, it's also eminently reasonable that many here have an affinity for Mix. We've followed him longer than this club has existed and seen him deliver in key places plenty of times. The kid has some crazy NT record. Went 20 or more caps before ever being involved in a loss (something like that anyway, mgarbowski can fact check, though it's not critical to my point).

Of course, the reverse is true, too, as he didn't do enough in the opinions of many to earn fan/club capital. If folks don't want to mitigate that by considering the disaster that has been our lack of a midfield, I disagree, but they can have their perspective.

As for the club's behavior, sadly, most people's morals extend only as far as the starting point of their unchecked power. It's a Venn diagram where the morality and power circles never touch. Proving yet again, everyone is a piece of shit. So yes, they are pieces of shit or shitstains, in Tomparlance. But I don't know how different their actions are from what other clubs would do. I suspect it's 60/40 toward behaving the same.

I would say that I don't think a club like Barcelona would handle it the same. But maybe that's more of a function of them not being limited/unlimited in the same ways, since we're talking about what Txiki would do either way. At Barca, he took the haircut and moved Zlatan asap. Here, they were bigger bullies. So I guess that just further proves my morality/power theory. And that everyone is still a piece of shit to the extent they believe themselves immune from retribution.

Mix had interested parties. Mix choose to take more money to sit on the bench.

Capitalism and morals don't mix. There is a contract, both parties are fulfilling their obligations. Blame capitalism.

This. I don't have "inside sources" like some on this board ;) but it was implied that the team was trying to move Mix & Mix was looking for a new team but both sides didn't like the offers - for understandable reasons:

1. Mix was way overpaid for MLS wage scales and no team would take him at his current rate, and NYCFC didn't want to keep any salary (makes sense when you can buy him out with $0 cap impact).

2. Mix may have had offers that paid him less and/or were unattractive because of the league/level of play/etc. No one is going to take a pay cut just out of the goodness of his heart.

Neither the FO nor Mix are right here. Both sides had options and chose to play the game until now. Mix is probably worth $200-$300k in the league. If he wants to stay in MLS then he will need to revise his wage demands. If he wants to earn $, then he needs to work those Europe connections. Best of luck to him.

What everyone overlooks with the Mix situation is the impact the contract "negotiation" has on all players in the league. If he took a pay cut or buyout for less than full value, Mix would effectively be screwing over every current and future player. The last thing a player wants to do is set precedent to reduce the value of a guaranteed contract. My bet is the players and the union are applauding Mix for his actions. Given a choice between pissing off all players and taking less money or getting paid full value and being welcomed by his future teammates when this is all over... this is a simple decision.

Doesn't this happen a lot though? Players leave all the time for lower salaries if it gets them playing time or in the good graces of their national team coach.

Nice so we will have 700k this summer roughly. Never a bad thing to have money to spend just in case. Never know if an injury happens or if a player doesn't work out

No, I think you read his response wrong -- it's highly likely the team spent the Mix money this winter, knowing he'd be off the books before the season started. It would be a huge dereliction of their duty if they didn't spend that money already. Ring, Herrera, Wallace etc are the signings using Mix's money -- it makes no sense for them not to be.

Not every league operates under a CBA, even if they have a union to represent themselves, players may negotiate contract terms individually.

Within 5 minutes of the Extra Time Radio broadcast on the Eastern Conference preview, Matt Doyle says, "I can be talked into that NYCFC is significant worse."

So he says we're not making the playoffs and we're the 2 seed in the eastern.

Now he says this shit? Dude's a metro supporter at heart.

Source? Someone here ( NYCFCfan NYCFCfan?) posted a different day.

2017 rules don't seem to have been posted on the league website yet. It was 3/1 last year, but that doesn't confirm 3/1 this year.
Got confirmation from the league, it's March 1st. Asked for a time but wasn't given anything specific.

So if Mix is gone it has to be done by then.
