2018 Roster Discussion

So, if HerrerA coMes bAck, can we Guess which non-domestic plAyer should geT cut to free up an international slot?
The correct answer is Hountondji. I don't have to like Amagat, but he's probably better than T-Mac and his contract is up end of the season. Hountondji provides no value on the roster. Ibeagha's emergence means that Houtondji has no chance at a roster spot next year because you don't pay your #4 CB 220k base salary. The only issue will be if his contract is multiyear guaranteed.

Can you cut a guy on the disabled list?

I'm not sure we can cut anyone midseason in this way, and my post was pretty much tongue in cheek, but I would be shocked if we could ever cut an injured player during the season.
Didn’t think so. The player would still be covered under team insurance dealing with the injury.

An international player occupying an international roster slot who is added to the Season-Ending Injury List may be replaced with an international player.

Seems like Hountondji was not put on the disabled list or the season-ending injury list and is taking up a slot. I hope moving him to one of those lists will free up the slot.
What’s more interesting about that webpage is the list of International spots (2) that expire on 12/31. International spots have gotten pricier, so I really hope the team takes the money they’d spend on additional slots and puts it towards bringing in better American players which in turn would help our USOpen Cup chances.

MLS Digital honest sucks at updating anything that's not actively looked at their site. I actually DM'd a few of the guys since when the browser is smaller and the teams are batched into Eastern Conference, Western Conference, and Expansion, rather than just having all the club logo listed, they had LAFC in Expansion and didn't have Miami, Nashville, or Cincinnati in Expansion.

I would imagine the long game plan is to let the academy supply those players. I know it is way too early to try and figure out who would be a "better American player" that we could snag, and some names will come out of the woodwork once the offseason rolls around. But that's the challenge.

I would imagine one of Nguyen or Feilhaber are going to be out of LAFC after this season and that's an easy example that comes to mind. Any other thoughts?

The increase in price is due to inflation from the drastic increase in allocation dollars. I guess the better question is whether or not international spots are more valuable now. The 175k slot we acquired was by far the most expensive whereas most other slots this year were 100k and below. Could see that increase this offseason, but I hope we are proactive in acquiring those slots this offseason and getting green cards.

This is the right take. Price is partly up due to there being more AM sloshing around. If you increase the money supply, you get inflation, independent of any underlying changes in supply and demand.

I also think, however, that there is more demand for international slots as teams start to spend more. There is more money now to attract overseas talent, and to fully use that money, teams need the international slots.

So, in short, I think both things you mentioned have an impact.

Add to that, more teams carving up the domestic player pool.

Sands and Scally most definitely take up spots that would traditionally go to an International for depth purposes.

The issue is that there's not a lot ready to come through right now. Haak is one and he probably eliminates the need for an Amagat over the next year. But you really need 5-6 guys at any time to eliminate having to spend money on guys like Hountondji

The whole crazy salary structure is designed to depress the amount of money that rank-and-file level domestic players can earn. Most domestic players can't easily play overseas (or don't want to), so the international competition for their services is limited. MLS rules seek to exploit this by also limiting domestic competition for their services, while at the same time giving teams the freedom to spend to attract overseas talent.

If the number of international slots remains static, however, the demand for good, inexpensive domestic players is going to increase. This may lead to some salary pressure for these players, but some of the benefit of that demand will express itself in transfer costs and spending on academies and the like.
