2018 Roster Discussion

Chanot was in the top 5 players in the Audi Player Index before he was injured. Not just defensive. All players.

He's great. He need him healthy. We need him back.

EDIT: Another thought...

I don't want Khiry Shelton to be picked by LAFC. Don't call me crazy. He's still a tradable asset. He can be sold to another MLS for asset. I can seriously see us trading him on the day of the SuperDraft with GAM/TAM for a higher SuperDraft pick (top 5).

But if Shelton being picked means we keep Chanot safe (and he's healthy and plays in 2018 because there were reports earlier that he wants to go back to Europe), then I'm okay with Shelton being gone.

You wonder if CFG would send us a kid on loan for him to be a backup CB

Assuming Chant is gone to Europe, what's the order for captaincy?

1. Villa
2. McNamara
3. Harrison
4. ?

Yes but we know TAM was used on him. Don't trust the MLS salary figures.
Those are not figures released by MLS, they are released by the players union, and are accurate. His cap hit is a different matter when factoring transfer fee and gam/tam etc. But his salary is accurate.
That being said, who knows how his transfer fee factors in next season, how much of it was prorated? How much, if any, will hit the cap next season?
You are right that LAFC'S cost will likely be higher.

I'd happily use GAM on Chabot to keep him. He is dope. So hopefully the injury/Europe concerns are gone and we keep him.

Interesting analysis of the TAM increase from the MLS site.

The thesis is that teams will use the extra TAM to sign multiple players at salaries above the league maximum in lieu of signing all 3 DPs. It notes that each DP costs one-eighth, or 12.5%, of a team's salary budget, so if a team has 3 DPs, those players will take up 37.5% of a team's salary budget.* The article posits that teams will chose to forego signing the full allocation of DPs and will instead use TAM to sign multiple players making between $500,000 and $1,500,000, because those can have a budget charge as low as $150,000.

I am a little skeptical that this is completely true, but I do think you might see some teams choose to go with one DP making, say $3 million, and then 6-8 TAM guys around a million each.

* - 2018 max salary = $504,375 and 2018 max budget = $4,035,000.

SOunds like Tinnerholm a done deal ... we have our RB

Source: https://www.expressen.se/kvallspost...n/anton-tinnerholm-klar-for-new-york-city-fc/

Transfermarkt lists him as a free agent, so we won't have to pay a transfer fee.

I just hope he's a TAM and not a DP player. He has limited experience with the Swedish national team but still is called up which will be a concern during international breaks. He has recorded 6 goals in 98 matches with Malmo.

Again, never trust a highlight video...

Following up, think about this roster set up.

3 DPs all making $2 million and up - $1,513,125 budget charge
7 TAM players averaging $900,000 and bought down by $743,000 each* - $1,100,000 budget charge
5 key subs averaging $125,000 each - $625,000 budget charge
12 backups and homegrowns averaging $65,000 each - $780,000 budget charge

Total budget charge = $4,018,125, which leaves $16,875 left over.

* - This means the 7 TAM players use the full $5.2 million of TAM available for 2018.

Nice find. He is 26 years old and has been playing in the Swedish first division since he was a teenager. He has lifted the trophy with his club the last two years.

Great work on this calculation. I think some of those TAM players will have lower salaries that will let us spend a bit more around on depth signings.

Based on your calculations, we can have a full DP/TAM lineup and throw in someone making $150K (say Herrera or Harrison).

And think Herrera already makes less than $150K and Harrison makes less than $200K (2017 reported figures) and both are already starters.

Plus, Lewis and Sands don't count against the cap.

I am going to shift this to its own thread.

Another note. The re-signing of Matarrita and a TAM signing of Tinnerholm using TAM is less consequential if the club is fully committed to using $4 Million of TAM each year for the next two years. $1.2 Million of TAM is committed by the league but CFG would need to pony up another $2.8 Million for the discretionary charge.

Assuming they do, the Matarrita deal that had us up in arms last week is a no-brainer.
