2018 Roster Discussion

Shelton rookie year. Matarrita. Lampard. Chanot. Saunders concussion first game ever.

That's off the top if my head.

Aside from the Saunders thing which is on the team because it was an in game call listing players that have been misdiagnosed still doesn't explain how it has anything to do with the team physios. Do you honestly think the team is going:

"Frank Lampard is hurt we asked the team phsysio staff what they think it is and they said its this"

"You think we should send him over to get an opinion from a specialist at the #8 ranked hospital in the country that we are affiliated with?"

"Nah, lets just go with the physio that should be good."

This Medina kid better be Almoron Part 2. I'm starting to get disgusted with our DP choices. We're 1 for 4 and making MLS 2.0 choices.

Will Parchman talked on Twitter today about how the MLS Salary Cap doesn't matter because only two teams have shown the willingness to blow up the budget - Toronto and Atlanta.

That's an indictment of our Club. And I think he's right.
Honestly I like the direction the FO is going with the way their retooling for next season. They're learning how to spend smartly, I think the Victor Vasquez signing for TFC opened their eyes. I just realized that if the Medina deal goes down as reported that means he'll be a young DP which means his salary won't be charged the max rate on the payroll. This gives flexibility to go out and get the depth to support him, Villa and Maxi (more Ring/Vasquez level players). That's how we close the gap with Toronto, not one big name signing but with several smart signings to complement the core we've already built.

I agree, but this kid can also potentially grow into a big talent. Moreover, this might be Villa's last season here and we need to get a big player to replace him.

Gotham Gator posted some good info on TAM and cap interactions along with an article showing how hard it is to spend max TAM and sign 3 DPs. For some teams it may be an either or. He may have mentioned it and I missed it but the young DP route is a wrinkle that could be a really nice solution to max out both DPs and TAM. Now that you point it out it seems like a great move by the club, I always forget about the different cap hits for young DPs.

Keep in mind that 4 million dollars is like 1/3-1/4 of an entire team's payroll for some in MLS. Lol

The only problem with signing young players as DPs is that young players are inconsistent.

This is my worry and why I said he better be Almiron 2.0

If he doesn't come in, win a starting spot straight away and score 12-15 goals, it's a failure. We're woefully missing another goal scorer.

There is really no reason our front-line, the way we play, can't be on 40 goals. Twenty from Villa, at least ten from Harrison and whoever the other winger is. I'm not sure 12-15 is a reasonable ask from a 20-year-old in his first year in MLS, but I definitely think he should be in double digits if he comes here, especially if he's a DP. Also think Harrison needs to continue to grow. I'd peg Jack for 12-15 and Medina for 10-12. Then if Villa gets 20 again, we should have the best offense in the league.

I wouldn't be happy If Medina gets less than Jack. Actually I'd be passed off.

Means he’s not a DP. Which is good.
I’m not going to get pissed off that the only way we get a 20-year old good enough to play for MC is because of visa issues.
I guess, but it would be a nice to actually own him versus Man City buying him.

To the contrary IMO. I know we were all upset the way the Lampard scenario went down, but if Manchester City wants the guy, doesn't that portend potentially good things if he does come here?

Again, the goal is to get Villa a title in potentially his last season with us. I'll take this dude for a year if he's as good as a Manchester City-level signing would seem to indicate.

I'll make the argument another way -- Yangel Herrera is someone who (potentially) could go over to England. They scouted and signed him, then loaned him here. I'd say that one worked out even better than we could have hoped. They've disappointed us in the past, but they do get a small amount of leeway for the way they've handled things the last 12 months.

I'll take the wait and see approach, but I would like to see NYCFC be the one paying transfer fees versus Man City.

Why does it matter? It's the same ownership group holding the purse strings.
Absolutely, but I would want to know that the good young players we have will stay for more than a season or two, versus just being recalled.
