2018 Roster Discussion

Ruiz is he perfect MLS DP. Reasonably priced. CONCACAF. European experience. Plays an offensive position on the pitch.
Caldwell isn't signed yet, but he will likely sign a 4 year deal. Johnson will be 29 years old in May. Caldwell will be 22 in February.

I don't see us having a goalkeeper that's in their mid to late thirties because of how we play. So, I see Johnson being the number one for one to two more years then it really becomes a competition for the starting spot.
Why can’t a goalkeeper plays to his late 30s or early 40s even if he uses his feet a lot a la Neuer or Stegen? Still not the same physicality

Wait, this math isn’t adding up. Johnson won’t be in his mid to late thirties for another 6 years at least (depending how you define that). Do we really think Caldwell will compete with SeanJohn in 2-3 years for the starting keeper spot? I sure as hell don’t (and if he does, then we hit it out of the park with the Caldwell pick).

Also, why can’t a keeper in their mid to late thirties play in our system? I understand that our keeper needs to be great with his feet, but I don’t see how age comes into play there.

This was the point made by Bobby Warshaw. Yes, maybe they drafted him to be their Edinson.

Bono is the starting keeper for Toronto two years out of the SuperDraft. And I'm just making some big assumptions. You don't pick a keeper with a 1st round SuperDraft pick when you have a guy in their late 20s just to let him rot on the bench for his entire career.
Yeah, that's worked out for TFC, but their keeper before was Clint Irwin. He doesn't hold a candle to Sean Johnson.

And why not pick a keeper in that spot? If we plan to hold onto SeanJohn, sure Caldwell will "compete" for the spot, but I don't see how he wins it (and again, if he does, that is FANTASTIC news as he really must be a talent).

Picking at #19, anything you draft there someone is going to be riding the bench and not making the 18. Or you loan them out and see what you got. I don't see any trouble in drafting a keeper there (at a spot where any other position was highly unlikely to make the roster) to be a long-term #2 to SeanJohn.

If they really rate him that high, then that's fantastic. I'll admit that I don't know a whole ton about the quality of Caldwell, or this year's draft class for that matter. But if he's legitimately able to compete with SeanJohn in 2-3 years, then either he's really, really good. Or Johnson has really declined. Or, as others have pointed out, perhaps Sean gets some overseas interest.

The other point made by Warshaw is that picking Keepers in a draft is never flashy. Outside of Blake, they always fall in the draft. Picking a Keeper at #19 is good value in that you may get one of the top players in the draft, but don't have to trade up for him

I get that. All I'm saying that with the form Sean was in last year, I wouldn't expect Caldwell to legitimately compete with him for the #1 spot until Sean is on the downside of his career. Or he steps in if Sean leaves.

I am of the mindset that drafting a capable long-term #2 keeper there is definitely acceptable and a great use of that draft pick.

What if Caldwell is the next Bono/Blake, etc.?

We don't know if the kid is any good. Claudio and PV seem to think he was the best Keeper in the draft.

Then that's great if he is. And IMO, Sean Johnson was better than both of them last year, so in that scenario we would have a great #2 keeper (IMO, Blake is close - Bono is a nice keeper, but I don't get all of the hype on him).

And just to clarify, I don't mean to be arguing anything against Caldwell. All I'm saying is that expecting Caldwell to unseat Sean Johnson in 2-3 years is a bit ambitious at this moment based on what we know and that if he turns out to be a serviceable #2 keeper for us for several years, I would still be of the opinion that that was a useful draft pick at #19.

I have no horse in this race. Warshaw said that he thought Johnson was the 2nd best GK in MLS last year. I happen to agree with him.

What I'm getting at is that Caldwell may be a different type of GK than Johnson. We will continue to play out of the back for the foreseeable future. If Caldwell ends up being the best GK in MLS with the ball at his feet, Warshaw's point was that he may supplant Johnson.

Can't stop laughing. I've been trying to get Polish citizenship for a while but their embassy is a pain in the ass. I wonder how Gio is doing.

Having an EU passport is an awesome insurance policy when you’re traveling. It’s worth the effort if you’re eligible.
