2018 Roster Discussion

The timing is interesting. It could just be that today is deadline day, but it comes on the heels of the Harrison transfer and that sweet GAM that arrived yesterday

That's an awfully quick move if it's based on the Jack cash. Also, I don't think today is deadline day, at least not in MLS, which I think is what controls.

I’ve been of the belief the wheels have been in motion for new player(s) earmarked with Harrison funds. He was leaving one way or another for the max GAM.

Shit Sorry... seems I was very late the party on Ofori... I’m not in game shape yet... still off season slow.

I'm not giving Bobby Warshaw the clicks, so I'm just going to post his write up on us. And before I do that, let me just start by saying fuck Bobby Warshaw. He's continually spreading the false notion that you need a team with many Americans to do well in the league. They know MLS. They know the players. They know the travel. What absolute bullshit. This is honestly some right-wing nationalist soccer propaganda he's putting out.

New York City FC: Institutional knowledge
New York City FC is another team that appears to be very nicely balanced from the front to back with talent all over the field. However, they could still have the same problem that haunted them the last two years: a lack of steel in the back. “Steel in the back” is a bad soccer cliche, so let me re-frame the concept.

There’s a clear trend over the 22 years of MLS Cups: every single champion has had a domestic player starting at center back. What does that mean in reference to 2018? Why does having a domestic center back matter? Domestic players bring institutional knowledge. They understand how to navigate certain moments over a long season. When the team goes down a man against an emotional Columbus team at the end of the year, they have a better understanding of the situation.

David Villa and head coach Patrick Vieira offer plenty of experience, but it always helps to have a guy who’s been there and done that at center back. Maxime Chanot and Alexander Callens have the ability to win a championship for their team, but it remains to be seen if they have the strange intangible that’s been ever-present in MLS winners.

its the first time im seeing "steel in the back" as a reference to good defense

You know...

...that's the dumbest thing I ever heard.

At least I now know why we gave up that fourth goal against Columbus - David Villa simply did not understand the enormity of the situation. Maybe ask one of your American friends how to handle a big game, David!

Also, funny story - this kind of bullshit gets peddled by people on here all the time. I remember someone after the Columbus game (the first leg!) trying to explain to me how Patrick Vieira just didn't understand the playoffs. I'm as new to MLS as NYCFC is, but I've never known supporters care so much about the nationality of players when it comes to evaluating them. One of the worst things about the league.

With Jack gone and Ofori in I updated this again. Also, PV made a statement that he believes we are "2 deep" at every position. So I tried to make that happen by putting Sweat down as a LB. And I moved Tummy to LW, and Ofori as Maxi's backup. I have Lewis & Tajouri on the RW, not sure who would win that battle. And I put Berget (pronounced like Beer Gut, driving me crazy hearing everyone on podcasts kill it) behind Villa.

  • It's amazing, we now only have 2 players left from 2016! Mata & Chanot.
  • We also only have 3 players from 2015, and I don't think Rawls is long for this roster.
  • Average age is way down with all the academy players
  • And what the hell are we going to do about international spots?

Warshaw is a hack. The hurdle to be employed in soccer media in the US is embarrassing.

Love Ofori. Was never given a fair shot at Stuttgart. Think the guy can be a stud for us.

I think Ofori is more of a backup for Ring or Herrera, not Maxi
