NYCFC v Montreal

What did Poku do in either of his starts this season to justify a continued starting role? Mendoza was awful against Columbus but I thought he bounced back a bit against Philly. I would like to see Poku in an attacking role as you both suggest but I think he would be much more effective coming off the bench when guys are tired and can't deal with his strength. For me Shelton and Mendoza both did well enough against Philly to justify another shot in the starting 11 on wed

I think when his strengths are played to, he will be more effective. Poku is not a midfielder. He doesn't have the stamina, or the defensive mindedness to play there. He has the strength to play as a holding forward. He excels at dribbling the ball through traffic. This also limits his defensive responsibilities.

I know many will push back because it's not where he has been most successful at places like Juve but I agree that it would be very interesting to see Pirlo further up the pitch. With his passing skills and soccer IQ why can't he play a Ozil like passing focused CAM role roaming around behind Villa providing distribution and link up play with no defensive responsibilities.
So in a sense you're saying to have Pirlo play the role of Lampard.

This is the team I would play:

Johansen

Allen; Brilliant; Hernandez (unless White is fit); Martinez

Mix; Bravo

Poku

Shelton; Villa; Mattarita

I think playing this formation makes us more solid and we have plenty of pace going forward.

Playing Martinez and Mattarita together would hopefully help us defensively on the left and also give us width. I would play Shelton narrower from the right so he can give support to Villa and allow Allen to make our width down the right. In the Philly game Poku was much too deep and was very ineffectual. His ability is using his strength in the forward areas and we should utilise that. I don't know if White is fit, but he seems to have more pace than Hernandez, so if he is I would bring him in alongside Brilliant.

We have two games in four days, I think this would be a great time to bench Villa for a night (maybe give him 10 minutes at the end) and maybe give some new defenders a chance. Even if we put our best lineup out we're probably going to lose to Montreal and I'd rather try something weird and hope for the best before really going for it vs Vancouver than screwing two games up at once

We may fade Drogba this game, which would be a welcome omission (as much as it would be fun to watch him play), with their 3 game week.

The role I described is not one I have ever seen Lampard play, he always seemed like more of a box to box shuttler with well timed runs kind of player than a top of the box passing CAM type. I do think his runs if he was healthy would be another way to unlock the D. He most likely has the skills to transition to that type of role in the MLS now that he doesn't have the legs to be a true box to box type shuttler any more. Sadly all these injuries have prevented us from finding out.

So more of a Valderrama-type player?

I assume most of you, like me will be at the game but if you're stuck at home. You'll have to stream the game on Fox Sports Go because YES will be showing a Yankees game.

FWIW Fox Sports Go is down today during the Champions League so.... have a back up.

Hmmm. I didn't see the first half but I have it on now on my phone with no problems. 48th minute, 0-0.

Really? It kept kicking me out, apparently they fixed it in the second half but it was un-watchable in the first.

We better fucking win. I'm not driving 2 hours each way from school with an exam on Thursday to see us lose or tie.
Wait, I was under the impression you're at Columbia, no?
