This is true.

Outside of Canada and northern US cities like NY, Boston, Philly, Detroit, Chicago and Denver, NHL isn't really a thing. No one in Arizona or Florida seem to know the sport exists, no idea why they have teams.
 
My guess is that Miami expansion is going to be somewhere in the Southeast. Travel is a big negative to MLS, right? Rivalries (like Cascadia Cup) help TV revenue. Orlando and Atlanta will need another team down there for both of those purposes.

It's a numbers game, just like spam email. The higher the population . . . the higher chance of more people watching (TV) . . . the more people watching, the more people advertisers can get their products / brand exposed.

Filling up stands will only give you a set amount of revenue game after game. Yes, you can expand a stadium, but realistically, you're going to hit a ceiling of 100,000 or so seats. That fat TV deal is going to allow advertisers to push their goods to potentially MILLIONS of viewers and that's blood in the water for the advertisers / sponsors.
 
I would mind seeing a few more "state" teams, ie- Revs and Rapids; perhaps up in the mid North; maybe Minnesota?

Vegas will eventually get one, wouldn't also mind seeing an Arizona team.

MLS could become the largest individual league in 20 years, sure. But collectively, the European leagues are going to be super tough to beat. The Champions League, for instance, will likely always be the single best club competition unless Europe screws up.

Hopefully, however, leagues in the Americas (US, Brazil), Africa (Nigeria), and Asia (China, Japan) grow to start diversifying club talent around the world. Way in the future, a meaningful global club competitions would be incredible to watch.

while this is a fair point, MLS is nowhere close to making this a reality. also, while miami is the 15th TV market in the US, ratings for their sports teams other than Lebron's Heat are pretty abysmal. the NHL only until very recently, is starting to transition from gate to TV revenue.

other than the 'sex appeal' of miami, i don't see this as a strong market at the moment.

I agree. Florida is such an enigma when it comes to sports. There are quite a few large cities/metro areas in Florida (Orlando, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, etc) but it seems like their sports teams are always under-supported and struggle to be relevant and in good health from a financial perspective. Like someone else said, being good isn't always enough to draw big crowds/interest there (like the Rays & Dolphins). I guess Floridians have too many other options with all that nice weather.

there are also plenty of transplants who already have allegiances to other non-florida teams.

It would be great if MLS joined Copa Libertadores. I think there was a comment at the MLS press conference for that. It would gain more exposure and become competitive for the league....but I doubt this will happen until MLS team start winning CONCACAF Champions Leagues titles. Hopefully NYC FC changes this ;)

I could be way off base here, but I wouldn't be surprised if Beckham's team wears all white kits at home in the style of Real Madrid. It would be more comfortable for the players during those hot summer games in southern Florida too.
