What Have Casual Fans Said To You About Our Chants And Support Culture?

I love this even though I became sick of the song when it was first a hit in 1972 and I was 10. I've no desire to hear the original song ever again but this nevertheless works.
I like it because it's straight from One Night in Istanbul.

As for America - do not rep.

In due time, it will all come together. More songs, more variety, more engagement throughout the stadium (especially when we have our own stadium). We forget very quickly that we are a first year team. Comparing MLS atmosphere to EPL or any other Euro league is apples to oranges at this point in time. We're 20 years into soccer here and for NYCFC, many first timers this year. You're right, we're nothing like EPL atmosphere but we will get there in the coming years. In the interim, make suggestions, throw ideas out, even better, start a song or a chant in your section.
I wish people wouldn't obsess over singing goddamned stupid songs all the time and maybe react to what happens on the pitch.

The rest of this is not to you. Nor was the first part, actually. Just picked yours to reply to.

The last thing I want is to be like the Seattle and Portland shitheads who think the game is all about their collective glory as "supporters" rather than the goings on on the field.

Sing a few songs, make a terrific noise, but watch the damned match. And try to be a bit timely.

And people who think all crowds stay loud after watching 70 minutes of a curb stomping obviously don't watch a lot of soccer.

I'll preemptively answer: yes. Damnit. It is too much to ask to expect fans to keep singing stupid ass songs while your team is getting cocked sideways up and down the field.

This is what I love. I can always come to the forums for a refreshing viewpoint. ;)

I don't disagree. It's one of the reasons I don't sit in Supporters section. I like watching the game and jumping in as I choose to chants/songs that I like and I prefer them to go along with what I see on the field/team we're playing. Having said that, the thread was on the topic of support culture and when I think of a supporter, I think of someone singing/making noise for 90 minutes plus. I do think there's a place for them as well as a place for people like you and me. I accept that they are not necessarily there to watch the match and it took me a while to accept that, I'll admit.

I think you're looking for a perfect mix of the best of both worlds that isn't attainable. The supporters section creates the culture that is fun and exciting that facilitates loud, energetic noise and atmosphere. You can't just a la carte chant/sing and recreate the same type of atmosphere.

On the other note, I disagree with your generalization that the supporters (in this example directed at Seattle and Portland) dont care about what is going on on the field and just get wrapped up in the supporters "glory". I'm sure there are individuals that are like that (in all SGs around the country/world), but just because a group sings through an exciting run of play, doesnt mean they are not paying attention to the game.

Edit: Hit enter too soon.

I do understand that they type of supporting may not be for most, so understand those that like to support/sing/chant in other ways, but I think the continual singing/chanting is nothing but positive for the home side

Mixed feelings it does make a really good atmosphere when the singing is going well and good Tifo is always fun to look at but the main event should always be on the field. I think most people in supporters groups are good knowledgable fans but they also do attract some sorts who are more interested in the trappings of soccer culture than actually interested in soccer itself which is weird.

If someone is chanting "I believe that we will win" while his team is down 3 goals with <10 mins left, he should get drop kicked in the dick.
For the US/Belgium game last summer I was at the bar where the Long Island AO chapter met for the game. After we lost, a group started the I believe chant.

I have to admit that the irony/stupidity of it lifted my spirits. I hope that doesn't qualify me for a drop kick to the dick.

Did you start the chant? No? Then you didn't deserve a dick drop kick.

Of course every fan should sit where they are comfortable and pay as much attention to the actual game as they want. I always found it odd when SSs turn their backs on the game, but that's me.

At the same time, the noise they make undoubtedly has a big impact on the players. There is a reason most of the players come over to the SS at the end of the game to pay respect. The SS means a lot to them.

Why not chant that? To me it means they're looking ahead, not oblivious to what just happened. Plus it's better than "fuck Belgium."

Truth. Anything is better than chanting "fuck *insert team*". Part of the fun is being creative and singing weird shit. That's why the Hey Baby is so painful, because it's done so often and it makes it seem like we can't think up anything better.

P.S. I know a place on the LES where you can get drop kicked in the dick for $8 and a metro card. Worth every penny.

The atmosphere at most EPL games is very very poor compaired to what it used to be since the all seated stadiums came in .the kop and Stretford end are just a myth and full of plastic tourists .
Unbelievable but the only decent atmosphere is at crystal palace .
The rest including city are crap I'm afraid
