2021 Roster Discussion

I don’t care where a player is from if they perform well enough on the pitch and help the team win. I’m just wondering if there are regions in the world that would help NYCFC put people in the seats more than the North Atlantic/North Sea area of the globe.

they only way to get people in seats in NYC is to bring in a global name. the soccer snobs of the city just don't want to watch MLS unless they get to see a superstar or two.

How many times has any team (particularly mls) made a really huge signing under-the-radar? almost 0. Tends to have some rumors preceding it. NYCFC has no rumors about any anything really other than a few random side players. If that's the case, what are the chances we actually sign someone for more than $1mil this offseason?

Those FCC signings had little if any pre-rumors.

We don't know if/when they are even going to happen, though. It seems to me like these types of rumors end up a week or two out from when/if a deal actually happens, if the team is lucky. It's rare to see a report 'FCC TO SIGN _____ TOMORROW'

Doyle has an em el es dot com roster build status update for every team in both Eastern and Western conferences. Not sharing for the NYCFC roster (he gets our DP slots/Medina's contract wrong, for example; and otherwise doesn't tell us anything we don't already know) but it is a good quick-and-dirty version if you're curious what's going on with other teams

all im getting at is that this dude is not coming here. Also outside of madrid/ barca/ possibly atletico la liga teams are not big spenders because there is not much money to spend. 8M is probably on the higher end for a team like celta.

You're right. I didn't realize Laliga was so top heavy. I mean top heavy to the point that 1 big guy from Madrid or Barza being worth the same as the whole Celta squad. I was looking at Celta's roster and their biggest name is Iago Aspas, who's already 33. Sheeesh

Because they have a stadium to fill now

i guess, even though the stadium was already on its way. although it doesnt matter now, they didnt have to go cheap on the team by being letting it be the worse team in the league by far for two years.

They spent last year too, but their signings didn't pan out, e.g., Locadia had 1 goal as a DP loan, and Yuya Kubo didn't work out either. Maybe they get the signings right this time? I think they've been building for 3 years, but they just started as a such dumpster fire and all of the other off-field setbacks along the way didn't help, that it will take them a awhile to right the ship.

Didn't the "deadline" for the owner's lockout pass last night at 11:59PM?

Do we know he gets the DP/Medina situation wrong? Doyle says we have 1 open slot and can get another by buying down Medina. AFAIK the alternative report is from the Athletic back in october, which reported that Lee said that Medina's deal was structured so that he would no longer be a DP in 2021.
How different are those really? Unless you assume Lee was speaking very specifically and the Athletic transcribed him perfectly, it's very possible that Lee meant or even said that the team can and intends to buy down Medina and it was reported as effectively a done deal. And like many things, it's possible the club has not submitted paperwork officially buying down Medina's deal while the labor dispute is pending, and i would not consider the Athletic report wrong either if that's the case.

Bottom line, both reports agree there is no obstacle to the club signing 2 DPs if it wants to. The Athletic reporting has been quite good to the extent I follow it, but I'm not sure it's so exact we can say this is an actual discrepancy.

When you are privately financing a $200 million stadium, I can understand how the decision is made to cutting some costs before it opens . Cincy problems went way further than just cheap on DPs too. Spending money more money doesn't really do anything if you don't have the right decision makers in place to spend it wisely.

They extended until tonight.

Thanks. The part of my post you responded to was actually an abandoned post. There's a glitch - I don't know if it's part of the forum or my browser, that if I start a post and abandon it that text keeps repopulating until I post in that thread. I didn't realize and accidentally included the artifact in my post. So you answered something I already knew (which is why I abandoned the post), but that still was nice and maybe someone else didn't know. :)

to be fair, they were filling where ever they were playing before too.
Attendance numbers were really impressive, but they also had some really cheap prices and free/discounted tickets for college students. Most expensive season ticket last year was like $90/game. Most expensive ticket for the new stadium is $10k a seat.

Yeah I read it that as the club COULD buy down Medina.

i know the issue you're talking about. It's likely some local storage thing which you can delete if you go into the developer tools, but idk if anyone cares enough to do that lol

I was relying more on my memory of what David Lee said in an interview with Tolleson/Joy but I tried to find the clip and it seems to be cut off so I don’t trust I have it right?

In some front office roster news Rodrigo (roroa4), backup kitman, has left the club and is now with Austin.

Claudio’s poaching continues.
