2021 Roster Discussion

The more I think about the Magno signing, the more I love it. This really is a hell of a signing. It's so ballsy. It may work, it may not work -- but man, talk about aiming high. Talk about putting a spear into the ground and telling everyone what you want to accomplish. I hope to hell this kid works out here, because if he does, it changes the game for NYCFC and for MLS.

That article seems to imply that his visa won't be a holdup and that he could be available for the LAFC game.
The article stated that the earliest he could play under MLS quarantine rules is the LAFC game, but there was certainly the implication that his visa will not be a hold up and that he will not have to travel back to Brazil as part of that process.

If we have to take Mitrita back this summer then the joke’s on whoever made that cake for Santi, unless there’s a way to restructure or buy down Mitri’s contract.
To the extent Santi (or summer DP plan B) was meant to be a Maxi backup or successor, oops.

Santiago is replying to tweets congratulating him on his move to NYCFC, looks like this should become official fairly soon.

reports say he travels here by the end of the month

Here he is thanking people congratulating him.

Whither Mitri then? Perhaps the wage complaints are not real.

so me just looking at saudi fans translated tweets, there seem to be some doubt on his claims on the lack of payment. apparently if the team did not have money others would of complained and apparently only mitri has. now it could be that mitri gets paid alot more than others so he is voicing his concern. Others think he's not worth the trouble and want him to leave.

Not sure how one affects the other.

It looks like Santi would be our 3rd Young Player signing. If Mitri returns, we'd have 3 DPs - Maxi, Mitri and Talles, with Talles being the Young DP we need to get our 3 Young Players.

The more interesting dynamic if Mitri returns is figuring out where everyone plays. Talles is here to be a left winger, which is also where Mitri plays.

Is this about right then?

ST: Heber
ST/W: Magno, Castellanos
W: Thaigo, Tajouri-Shradi
W/AM: Santi, Medina
AM: Moralez

That's 8 players for 4 starting spots. I assume Castellanos at striker with Heber potentially unseating him when healthy. Magno walks into the starting left wing spot, which puts Santi in competition with Medina at right wing, and Moralez holds his AM spot and is backed up by whomever doesn't start at right wing. Tajouri-Shradi may struggle to get many minutes.

And they want to bring in another DP this summer. I actually wouldn't mind a central midfielder. Sands is double duty backing up central defense and could even be sold. Parks, Morales, and Acevedo are quality but none of them are irreplaceable.

Maybe they know something about Heber we don’t.
Or maybe Taty gets sold in August

santi has been called a "mediapunta" alot in uruguay, which is a 10 position. so perhaps he is expected to fill in for maxi more often than not.

heber i think wont be back till like late july/ august and with the fixture congestion i dont think it will be too much of an issue mixing him/taty/ maybe thiago as well.

or maybe we have a congested schedule so having depth to rotate and cover for injuries and international duty is something we need. plus competition for positions just raises everyone's level. 2-3 players to a position is not that bad. even if we suffer an injury, international duty absence, or someone gets sold, we don't suffer from it and we have quality to rotate this summer.

Yesterday Shwafta said Santi would be a DP and he’s never been wrong ever. But honestly he seemed kind of sure and that’s what I was going on.

Could be interesting to stay in a 3-5-2 as well:

F: Magno, Castellanos
M: Thaigo (LM), Moralez (8), Parks (6), Santi (10), Tinnerholm (RM)
D: Callens, Sands, Chanot

Thaigo would have to track back a bit, and you could argue for Morales or Acevedo over Parks at the 6. Very attacking lineup.

Striker: Taty is the starter for the balance of the season, as Heber may take a while to get back to fitness.
Left Wing: Pick between our right footed wingers: Talles, Andrade and Jasson. I am betting on Talles.
Right Wing: Medina over Shradi.
CAM: Maxi, with Santi getting trained up as his successor next season.

Right before being loaned to Saudi Arabia, Mitrita played as a 10 because of Maxi's absence and did very well. It's a very small sample, and Mitri did not come close to fulfilling his potential in his time here, and apparently hasn't done great in the weak SA league. So my preference would be to see his backside on the way out the door. But if we have to take him back, he may be one of the best options to replace Maxi.

If Thiago can cross that would be great. I think Ronny really wants the LM there to stay wide and be able to send in dangerous crosses.
