2021 Roster Discussion

He's never made an MLS appearance this season. How many bench appearances has Haak even made? Why would it take months to agree to send Haak out to Hartford?

Yeah he was on the bench pretty regularly before Santi/Thiago/Talles got here. Now they just don't have the room for him anymore. My guess is that he was insurance in case those guys didn't work out, but the way the newcomers are playing, Haak isn't really needed anymore.

Yeah, and likely due to the ridiculous schedule congestion NYC just had and in case of any injuries occurring.

Still think he could be a top MLS player. Probably needs to play as a Second Striker behind Taty in a 4-4-2. We certainly have the personnel to accommodate that. But not quite sure he’s a guy you build your team around either. He’s no Chris Wingert.

scoring yes... lack of defensive effort, no. and the latter will keep him on the bench unless we are chasing a goal.
Also, in my memory he was as streaky and unreliable a scorer as everyone we have now. What would benefit this club is someone who scores a goal at least every other game -- not on average but actually that regularly. Villa mostly did that thru 2018. Heber did in 2019, but wasn't close to that in 2020 before his injury.
If you play Mitrita you're just substituting in like-for like: someone who might go on a tear of 6 goals in 3-5 games, but also can go 4-6 games with no goals. We've got more of those than can play in any one lineup already. He would add depth in case someone gets hurt, but I don't see much else.

i was going to make that point too but i got lazy. lol. totally agree.

Seeing the MG logo on the Saudi uniforms threw me for a loop. My dad has a 1970 MGB and I didn’t know the brand was bought by a Chinese state-owned company until now.
In my youth I had an MG Cars key ring. Sometimes someone would notice, and ask if I owned one and I would just say "no," very matter of fact, and a few seconds later they'd figure it out. Cool logo I always thought.

Was Mitrita better at 9 million than Magno at 12?
okay, apples and oranges... anyone out there able to explain what Magno has done on the pitch we can be excited about?

kid was injured when bought (arguably still injured in his LAFC debut), to expect him to show top level stuff right away makes no sense. Hes had a total of maybe 90 ish + minutes or so. getting into form etc i expect either in late season/ playoff game show something or for sure in 2022.

of course this falls on FO to get someone injured from the start.

EDIT: also its not 12M yet, it was 9M i think and it can grow to 12 if targets are met.

Magno is just getting started. I think Mitrita had all the tools but just lacks the character to be a top player. Having watched him for about 120 minutes I think it is clear that Magno has great touch and very good passing and vision. He also seems pretty strong physically. But unless this is a by product of his recent injuries, he doesn't seem fast at all. He's failed at most of his dribbling attempts so far. Thus far he seems to be more suited for a striker, a false 9, or an attacking MF than a winger. In fact, with his excellent close control he could be a very good striker.

Interesting take...
So when does Deila give Taty get a break at the "9" and give us a different look at Talles... or maybe a 2 striker formation...
The clips I saw of Talles from Brazil seemed to highlight him coming from wide so I thought he played as winger. I get a kind of claustrophobic feeling watching Talles in the limited minutes he's had.
I'm still learning how to watch the game with wider vision to understand player movement and positioning. Always curious when more trained eyes can help me watch differently.

there was an interview they did with a journalist who covers brazilian soccer and lives in brazil, even he mentioned that was not fast enough for a winger, especially after his injury. he then said that talles would probably fit more as a 10 in the future.

I have no idea what position he'll end up playing and being productive at. Since he's such a young guy, maybe his body has filled in a lot since his early days with Vasco DaGama and he's heavier and less fast. Maybe it is the recent injury history. I remember the clips of him as a winger, rainbow flick and kick to the face included, but he hasn't looked like a winger for us yet, in the way that Thiago, whose first touch fails him a bit too often, is obviously a winger. A guy who can receive with his back to goal, control the ball really well, and has the body to take a bump from the centerback, can always be productive in or close to the penalty area.

Magno's longest appearance was 45 minutes, and that was 2 months ago. His other 5 appearances average 15 minutes each. I've no idea if he is fully healed from his injury but it is near certain he is not fully match fit yet. We're going to have to employ a fan's rarest attitude -- patience -- with no guarantee it will be repaid. NYCFC took a high risk/reward gamble with this signing. It's fair to approve or criticize that choice conceptually, but it's not near possible to judge whether it has or will pay off in fact.

Was just coming here to say this, probably shouldn't compare someone who played nearly 3,000 minutes for NYCFC to someone who has played 128 minutes (and the lack of minutes is due to being new/injured, not because of not earning playing time - something that actually happened to Mitrita while he was at NYCFC).
