2021 Roster Discussion

Medina is slumping lately, but has been generally productive this season. Good thing we were patient with him and allowed him to develop. Pirlo wasn't here for what he would bring on the field. Right or wrong -- we all know why Pirlo, Lampard, and Villa were here in the first few years.
Medina has not been DP level productive. He’s been fine. But not worth the fee paid. No way. He was a whiff

So far it's just DV and Maxi. All the others have been whiffs or whiffs in the making. Can I just get a DP that comes in and has an immediate impact? It happens, just not here.

The salary information exactly shows why NYCFC is a dumpster fire. Their top 5 paid players are:
-two players who basically don’t see the field (Heber and Talles Magno)
-one DP who is checked out and no longer producing (Maxi)
-one player who has been a massive disappointment and never developed even after years at the club (Medina)
-their top CB, usually reliable, who has been error-prone (Chanot).

in order to win your highest paid players need to be your best players. Not one of them is that this year.

You have to give them a pass on Heber, but, yeah.

I know. There are extenuating circumstances for Heber (he’s coming off a year long injury and you can’t expect him to jump right back in) and to an extent even Magno who came mid-season, was injured, and still fitting in.

but they are still not key cogs in NYCFC this year. Almost feels like you just want to get to the end to reset and try to get them on the field and to their potential to have any chance of success next year.

Alfredo Morales getting 600k a week, when the season started I'd have said "wow that's a good deal", but now after seeing him play for a few months I feel he should be more on like 200 or 300k. Unless he dramatically improves, I don't see him justifying such a crazy salary.

To round out a bit more, I also would add that Maxi's extension (2-3 years ago?) was generally understood to be a calculated risk, and IIRC the consensus was that it was a worthwhile one. At this point I would say it has not worked out as hoped, but it has not quite been a disaster. I would also say even now it was a risk worth taking. The substantial failure, though, has been not acquiring another player at Maxi's level - at his position or any other - or even close to his level since the club acquired Maxi before the 2017 season. Heber comes closest, but we have basically 28 games worth of value from him over 3 years. If you're going to bet on an aging player you need to have Plans B through E in place.

I think he's my highest contender for the 1 offseason buyout (depending on how the Medina situation plays)

If Medina stays, would he be bought down to be a non-DP? I know there has been chatter about this but it has never been obvious whether NYCFC bought him down. If he is bought down and Maxi leaves you would have 2 DP signings available which could dramatically remake the team next year.

He had a 4-year contract from 2018 through 2021. No extension or renewal has been announced. If nothing new happens he is just a free agent. If we re-sign him it will be whatever the parties agree to -- DP, TAM/GAM, whatever. There was no reason to buy him down this year, and use up Garber bucks, unless we simultaneously signed a new third DP. So he currently is a DP.

even better. The fact that he hasn’t been signed to an extension already probably means he’s gone at the end of this year.

even with 2 DP spots... the way this club has been signing, I bet we use them on potential/up and coming talent vs an established performer in a good league.

i would like to see them go try and poach some top performers from liga MX

For all we know, Medina has already had some kind of an extension or restructuring that was not announced. I don't recall his salary in prior years being this high, for example. This could be why it was rumored that he wouldn't have to be a DP this year.

medina was paid 750k in 2020. That's the same as 2019. A few other places have "raises" over their 2020 and 2019 salaries, but never had any renegotiations or renewals announced. For example, Callens was paid 600K in 2019 and 2020, but is now paid 700k.

It's very standard for multi-year contracts to escalate salaries over time in salary-capped leagues, including MLS. The expectation is that the cap will go up every year. Covid disrupted this expectation and was one of the reasons given for selling Ring and Matarrita: it was harder to afford all our salaries for players on multi-year contracts because the 2021 cap was not what everyone expected it to be.

Being a DP, Medina I think would only be affected by this if we had bought him down. The higher his salary in relation to the cap, the more expensive the buy down becomes in terms of GAM/TAM. But I'm not surprised by the progression of his salary over 4 years and while it could reflect a renegotiation or extension, I don't think that's necessarily the case. But given the very special relationship between this club and secrecy, we won't know until sometime between this season end and 2022 start.

Missed him. He's at $81,375.00. Same amount of base and guarantee.
