2021 Roster Discussion

Gloster deal reported as done by Dutch newspaper.

ETA don't know why the usual article preview isn't working. the machine translation begins:
PSV sells defender Chris Gloster to club from New York
PSV has sold 20-year-old American left back Chris Gloster to New York City FC, a club that plays at the highest level in the United States. This is confirmed by his management. The defender trained at the beginning of this season with the A-selection of Roger Schmidt, but it did not come to a breakthrough.
So now we have 3-deep right? I assume this means that they're unsure who will be starting and so they'll be fighting for the spot. I think that's a good thing, although we do now need to start looking at the other positions... heh.

Hopefully we can get an American into the United States quicker than a Dane.

I'd hold off assuming this is done ntil there is something official from one of the parties involved, but otherwise yeah, that's all corect AFAIK.

Are we sure Gloster is good?
Remember when Juan Pablo Torres came here? Zelalem? Maybe this is a reclamation project

I don't remember there being much, if any, fanfare about Torres and Zelalem coming here.

Perhaps Ronny is going to look to start two of Gloster, Gudi, and Amundsen in either a 4-2-3-1 or a flat 4-4-2.

We don't have anyone that can play left wing on this current roster.

Also took a peek at Gloster's transfermarkt page and noticed he's from Montclair, NJ. Maybe this was player initiated and he was looking for a return closer to home? And maybe the club is looking to move Gudi, just not at this immediate moment.

Just speculating out loud here.

zelalem was/ is still considered a bad signing due to his injury history. Torres was said to just run fast and nothing else - midas and a couple others who followed the US youth teams said things like this.

that being said, considering how we really need a LB its probably welcome to have an extra person for the spot considering gudi ( to me) is not meant for that position, despite his assist yesterday

This guy was getting absolutely zero time with his team, so I don't think he's some major prospect that we're getting and expecting to be a starter. My guess would be this signing is similar to a guy like Tony Rocha -- depth to make sure we have enough bodies in that position.

How far we've come -- writing off a U20 USA player because he's not getting any playing time for PSV! He was a standout at the Red Bull Academy and is still 20 years old. If by the end of the season we're still comparing him to Tony Rocha, something has gone horribly wrong.

He played almost every minute of every game for the USA at the U20 World Cup in '19 and was named to the Tournament Best XI.

I'm with Fred. From what I've read the kid sounds like an excellent prospect with good size and speed. That said, he's a prospect that's only 20 years old. And until I see Malte in action.....happy to see anyone come in and see what they can do. I don't mind Gudi as left mid when we are looking to protect a lead, but I'm not looking forward to him being the starter at the beginning of the season.

Wednesday's preseason match is against Columbus, according to NYCFC's schedule. Did I miss the update, or can't the club be bothered to tweet this out? I guess someone like Glenn Crooks has better things to do as well. Figure Tinnerholm and Maxi will get their first minutes.

Taty will be in Japan with the Argentina U23s -- games on the 26th and 29th -- as mentioned elsewhere. Preseason experiments aside, does Ronny go with Medina in the middle up top, with Jasson on the left and ITS on the right? Who else slots in as a potential center forward on the current Heber-less roster? The Nashville match follows three days later, so we're not likely to see False 9 Medina going 180 minutes. I guess the academy kids will step in as backup wingers.

It's still preseason and all the usual caveats, of course. But the upcoming Wednesday-Saturday matches simulate a stress test of the team's depth, with Heber still months away and Taty likely in and out of the lineup with pre-Olympics matches. The Taty/Heber situations aren't anything new. I'm surprised that the team hasn't picked up a replacement level backup forward as insurance, along the lines of the Okoli signing.

There was definitely buzz about JPT. I think the season before he joined he played a ton for his Belgian team?

Apparently Newcastle tried to get Gloster in January but couldn’t because of new work permit rules under Brexit (from Jeff Carlisle for ESPN).

Don’t know anything about him from U23 or otherwise but not writing him off yet
