2021 Roster Discussion

This seems like a really good piece of business by NYCFC. From what I read somewhere, it looks like this Brazilian team needed an influx of cash, and that's why they were selling Magno. So great job by the team to pounce on that opportunity. Of course there's risk, and of course there's a chance he might not be good here, but this is a big deal signing, to bring in an 18-year-old with previous interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe. Really exciting, and I think anyone that says we're not willing to spend for a title has been proven to be wrong.

How the hell is he here already but our other Brazil player doesn't have his visa?
says here he will be added to roster once he gets his visa, so maybe he is on another type of visa to be here a few days only then has to go back and wait for the P1?

I'm pretty sure tourist visas are usually valid for at least 90 days or so. I believe it is actually kind of flexible. The key is you have to promise not to work (which I'm sure he will comply with) and have a return ticket in hand. I wonder if he has to return even if he gets a P-1 visa? It would be nice if he can stay here while he waits, and I wonder if it helps, hurts, or has no effect on how fast the P-1 visa process takes.

On a related topic, does anyone know how the transfer window applies to someone signed during an open window but whose visa comes in when closed? Asking for a (couple of) friends. I know you can sign someone in a closed window -- he just can't join the roster until the window opens. Lots of MLS summer signings happen before the summer window opens and then are completed when it is open. But that sort of implies that signing someone during an open window does not mean anything either, and that could mean that if Andrade or Magno don't get P-1 Visas before June 1, they don't play until July 7. I'm not saying that's likely, or makes sense, but I can't rule it out. I think the key event is registration with FIFA. But I don't know if that can happen before the player can legally take the job in his new country.

I think as long as a player is registered with the team before June 1, he can play. The visa issue is only keeping him from being here, but he's already registered with us.

I thought YDP doesn't count towards DP?
of course it does. medina was YDP and he took up a spot. U-22 initiative is not the same as YDP. U-22i signings effect how many DPs or how much we pay a DP though.
Having a YDP means we are allowed 3 U22 players. With 3 regular DPs we can only have 1.

There's no reason we should not sign a DP for Mitrita's spot. Other teams have done it with players on loan. Worst case Mitrita comes back next year they can't find a new spot for him and the club has to buy him out. His 2021 salary is $700k. I doubt he's up for a giant raise in 2022. That's not nothing but it's not millions either, and probably he either stays in Saudi or they can find a new home for him that makes everyone happy.

Nope, says in the article:

Magno, a 2019 U-17 World Cup winner for Brazil, was recently named one of Goal’s Top 50 wonderkids in world football. He will be added to the MLS roster upon receipt of a P-1 visa and ITC.

Makes me think he can't

Young DP and Young Money are different things - this guy is a DP, not a Young Money signing.

The rub, though, is that having a Young DP allows us to make three Young Money signings.
Right. He is a Young DP, which is what Medina was until this season. Lower cap hit - opens us up to get three Young Money signings.

This makes me wonder what he is making, since if it's below the league max, he could be a Young Money signing, notwithstanding the large fee.

He's also signed through 2026 - a long contract. Plenty of time to sell.

Or Mitrita rolls on as a DP and Maxi rolls off.

I think we doubters have been proven right. We just used a DP spot on an 18 year old. Unless he comes in and lights the league up in the next 18 months, why should I be happy about this?

what if this new kid is Angelino all over again and we get the potential and none of the finished product
Sorta like Harrison.
Disagree. Harrison was terrific.
Which is my point as he's no longer here.
but he was terrific while he was here. Angelino was not.
I think the point is that we don't get the best of these players since once they improve, they head over to Europe. But, that's hard to get upset about since that's the way the entire league is constructed right now.

Generally, this is a good thing - we get a really good player and get to enjoy watching an "alumnus" once he leaves and plays overseas. It's only a problem if the player is really not cut out for MLS level of play while he is with NYCFC.

That may have been true of Angelino in 2015 (when the level was a LOT lower in MLS). I certainly don't remember him standing out and would have thought he'd end up more like Shea Facey than the player he has become - although I am glad to see it. Still, I do think he was a positive for the team.

Harrison was a level above Angelino. Jack was more than just an adequate starter - he stood out and was a top MLS player while he was here, with 10 goals and 6 assists his last year (2017). He also connected with fans in a way that few have for the Club.

I don’t care what our alumni do. I am not a Leeds or RedBull or Girona, etc fan.

you never are though. which is fine/expected i guess since the team has not achieved anything yet.

thing is - if we went and signed a big name, proven in europe and spent big money, there's no guarantee he'd "light up the league" either. He coudl very well fall flat on his face. Look at barca and all their flop, big name signings. Look at real madrid and hazard. big money, big name, doesn't always equal success.

while I don't know if this kid is worth a YDP spot or not, at least it is a YDP spot and not a full DP spot. his nickname is the "magician" and i don't think you get that kind of nickname if you're terrible. club took a bet on a young kid with huge potential and i think that's a good thing.
