NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2021

only thing that really bugged me is doyle saying we only had 2-3 top players...
He came around on that after the other guys pushed back and conceded maybe half our starters are top 5, which he correctly noted is less than the last few years.

Generally, I think the MLS media gys have been pretty fair to us. Dole especially has consistently said we were a top elite team for 5 years. Just because it's true doesn't mean he gets no credit for saying it.

But I also think that ever since that weekend in 2016 when both we and the Red Bulls lost to lower seeded Canadian teams, the MLS commenters decided that LOL, NY MLS teams just don't succeed in the playoffs, and so they will never pick us to do well there until we prove them wrong. Logically, that makes no sense, but we've done nothing to make them regret it, and I fully agree with the idea that you don't pick against a streak. And that won't change at least until we win the East and maybe not until we win MLS Cup.

Well are you expecting to get content you're not paying for? I realize YES isn't on most streaming platforms, but you have to subscribe to the network to get its content.

Just stating the fact that half the fanbase won't be able to enjoy this content. Also why much of the fanbase can't even watch games cause YES is only on traditional cable, which many people just simply don't have anymore.

I realize YES is what we have and for reasons... but would be nice if they would get back on streaming services.

Unfortunately, considering all the streaming services have dumped them it doesn't appear to be entirely YES's choice. Seems the streaming services have made a conscious effort not to care about sports programming. At least their coverage is good, and at least they are doing more coverage around the games than in past years. Pregame show now, and over the last year a few NYCFC specials.

streaming services dropped YES and associated channels because Sinclair wanted an arm and leg. They couldn't come to an agreement and so streaming services dropped them. it wasn't a purposeful dumping of sports channels as you seem to imply. obviously, they want to offer sports channels if possible, but they have to balance their costs vs subscriber prices. Business is business.

In any case, they have been doing a lot more programming for NYCFC than in past years and I think that's great. It is just a shame that probably half the fan base don't get to enjoy it. Not blaming any party or making any demands. It's just the way it is.

Everytime I turn around Hulu has a commercial saying it has live sports, so it does care about sports programming. Hulu and the other carriers didn’t drop Yes it dropped Sinclair and it’s 21 RSNs as Sinclair was probably hoping to leverage its supply of RSNs to get a higher fee. YES should make it a time exclusive for 24 hrs and then place it on NYCFC YouTube. if no one can see it, then what is the point of making it. I am sure they can still run ads on youtube.

It's not Hulu or YES or Sinclair. They don't get anywhere near most of the money paid for sports programming. That goes to owners and players. Everyone else involved is taking a slice of a small cut. Beyond that:
  1. Sports networks can make much more money by forcing everyone on a service (cable, satellite or streaming) to pay a certain fee, than they can selling it just to those who want it for a higher fee. This is how owners and players make most of their money, and a huge chunk of it comes from people who never watch their product.
  2. Streaming services have less ability to increase monthly base fees to their subscribers than cable or satellite can because they came into existence as a lower costs semi, sort of, a la carte alternative.
  3. Sports network fees are usually the highest network fees paid by cable, satellite and streaming services. If streaming services give in to every national and regional sports network, and force every subscriber to subsidize the most expensive programming regardless of whether they watch it they lose most (not all but most) of the reason for their existence.
  4. RSNs can't lower fees just to streaming services, and if they lower them to all services the owners and players will make less money and they will not allow that.
  5. Similarly they have chosen not to offer stand-alone sports subscriptions because the data tells them that will cause the cable and satellite model to start bleeding customers and that undermines the first point, which is how they make most of their money, and so owners and players won't let them do that. And that is why local games are blacked out of national sports subscriptions - to protect the RSN cash cow subscriber fees they get from everyone regardless of whether they watch or not which mostly goes back to owners and players.
  6. It always comes back to league owners and players.
  7. The owners are not on your side.
  8. The players are not on your side.
  9. I don't know why fans take sides when owners and players fight, because when it comes to us owners and players are allied against us to get as much of our money as possible. I really can't care how they split it up. But that's another issue.
  10. Nobody is offering true a la carte, and if they did you'd probably end up paying as much as standard cable for fewer channels.
  11. Either choose streaming, save your money, and stop bitching, or sign up for a cable or satellite plan that has YES. Those are your options.
  12. Well, I guess you can stream and keep bitching, but, come on. This has been going on for years now.

ETA: and specifically with YES, it's all about the yankees and MLB and the MLBPA, and everyone else including the Nets and NYCFC are along for the ride.

Anybody had a good experience with ESPN+ and a VPN? Any specific VPN you would recommend? Thanks a bunch.

Does this mean it won't be on ESPN for out of market?

so if you don’t have a traditional cable subscription you can’t watch 29 out of the 34(?) games this season. Going to be pretty hard to follow the team if you can’t see basically all the games.

Yeah, none of the streaming TV networks have YES (Hulu, Sling, FuboTV, YouTube, etc.)

YES Network really should offer a digital package for access to the YES App and all lives games on it.
