Salary Cap Available For Another Big Signing

Here's a good take on the situation from our "rivals":

Some of those castoffs are castoffs due to high salaries. You mentioned Ballouchy and he's on $140k. Grabavoy is on $120k. Brovsky is on $120k. Jacobson is on $180k. Wingert is on $145k. Josh WIlliams is on $125k. There are more as well...

Jesus. Sack them all. All of them dammit.

Williams, Grabavoy, Wingert, Velazquez all gotta go. How is it that Dunn gets cut but Velazquez is still there? I'll tell you. Dunny didnt play for RSL.

How about Aron Johannssen? or another young USMNT playing overseas right now.

Would be awesome, but his salary has to be dp. Even if it isnt, we would need to factor in transfer money and what not which would make it a dp. *sigh* really thought mls would allow 4 dps by now.

I don't understand why they include transfer money when determining if a player is a DP. Obviously in the case of Aron Johannssen his salary would make him a DP. But say we could get a player like him under the DP threshold but the transfer fee was something like 5 million. What does the league care if CFG wants to splash down 5 million for a player that will help draw more fans and raise the level of talent in the league. I don't see the down side but I am sure I'm missing something about poor Columbus or one of the other teams in small cities that we are all apparently supposed to feel bad for.

Not saying I like it, but the rationale is 2 fold.

1. Economic disincentive. They don't want their clubs losing money. Thus they do all kinds of things to control their spending. Which relates to ...
2. Unfair playing field. They don't want MLS to be a league of haves and have nots. A lot of players could be had for low salary and high transfer fee. That would turn this very quickly into a league where only a few teams could compete. Fortunately, we'd be one of them.

Aron I believe is on the Allocation list. They include the transfer fees to prohibit the big money clubs from going out and buying young stars on cheap deals. Think if NYCFC or LAG or Seattle wanted to get a Johannsen, Brooks, Green, etc. Probably costs you 5-15 Mil. But none of them make DP money. Then those squads wouild have an advantage.

It's short sighted because good business is to bring those guys here - and then maybe sell them back in the long term. If Green is worth 3 Mil today - if he succeeds, he's a 15 mil player.

I wouldn't be surprised if we go with Drogba in the end.
Possibly pay down his salary with allocation money.

Was going to ask the other day, how many people will need to say no to him before he comes here for below DP money. Reading into all the rumors about him he seems pretty desperate at this point. Almost every rumor out there seems to be generated by his agents trying to drum up interest. The pattern is the same each time: "Sources linking Drogba to team X"... Wait 3 days, team X releases statement saying they never had any interest in Drogba. Have to think someone in China, India, or the middle east would pay him though. For a guy who has always followed the $$ hard to see him taking the small amount needed to be considered a non-DP, even with an allocation buy down.

Saw a great stat about brovsky. He's ranked as the #1 back (American) based on things like chances created, challenges won, successful passed and so on.

If you add in points for "coolness of mustache", then he's far beyond any other player.

Do not bag on Brovsky, who has single-handedly prevented several goals this season. While he's clumsy at left back, he's superb at right back, and should be starting.

That would take a HUGE submission from Drogba. He was asking for ridiculous amounts of money, something like $8MM. He would need to take a 1/10th of that, plus it would cost a boatload of allocation money.

I'm guessing no on Drogba.

I basically agree with this except for the fact that we now have Iraola to fill that spot.
