Apparently, addition by subtraction for us.

anybody else nervous/anxious about the expansion draft?

I think there's a good chance charlotte will take one of our guys. This is a championship squad now.. don't really want anybody to leave. Sadly, it seems inevitable there will be at least a few changes going into 2022 via expansion draft, trades, or otherwise. hopefully, we can resign maxi another year if only to mentor santi to become a true 10.

It depends what Charlotte is looking for. Some teams use the expansion draft to fill a roster, some teams use it to get assets they can use in other ways. But yes, I would say it seems quite possible we're going to lose someone.

where would you upgrade. LB. Medina. Where else?
Heber??

Maxi, if not gone, can't be relied upon to do what he did late this season. Do we already have his replacement? Should we protect that replacement?

Edit: I didn't closely read the post you quoted for full context. Removed part of initial reply.

I think we are OK at left back. While Gudi is not Anton on the left, he does put in good crosses and is becoming a bit of a free kick specialist. Malte is inconsistent but he's young and perhaps he'll get better? If not, we still have gloster who is a natural left back. Perhaps in 2022, he overtakes malte as the backup?

I think we need to sign a CB. Chanot is getting older and maybe he's not retiring just yet, but we need a young CB to begin the mentorship now.

I'm not sure we need a new #9 yet. Heber is still around and Talles can play the #9. When he subbed on vs Philly, Talles did a lot of the work like Taty would have and it helped change the game.

My priorities this off season would be a CB, right back, and attacking midfielders. If medina can stay as a non-DP, i'm ok with that. otherwise, he'll need to go as well. as much as i respect his growth and improvement this year, we need someone to be good on both sides of the ball.

Let’s assume Maxi doesn’t need to be protected. I also think Santi is the replacement.

If we lost all three of our current LBs, that would be fine by me.

I was thinking about who to leave unprotected.

Heber and Talles Magno don’t play like Taty. Taty was our MVP this year. Talles Magno can hold up play a little but he’s not great in the air and he doesn’t put in any deeensive effort. It’s frankly embarrassing. Heber has lost a step I worry and can’t hold up play like Taty. He wants to play off the shoulder of the CBS.

Agree we need a CB. Think we need two. Haak will slot in as one. But if Sands is gone, we’re still short a CB.

THink we need to give heber time. He came back from a bad injury and barely got any game minutes. He'll need time and actual minutes before we have any idea where his level is at. Talles is just 19 and can learn. Think back when Taty first arrived. I don't think anybody saw him becoming the player he is today.

We definitely need a CB, maybe two. Need backups for callens and chanot for USOC and some regular season matches, when they go on international duty, and if they happen to get injured. And if sands is gone, that need is even more urgent like you said.

Put me with K Kjbert in the worried about Heber camp. I hope you're right, but after the hat trick in CCL early in 2020, he did nothing in 12 games last year before he was hurt. I gave him a pass because it was Covid year. I thought his movement was not as good and wondered if he was not as fit as usual - and if so, somewhat understandable. He also suffered from a lack of service.
But we're now running on basically 2 full years where he has not contributed. It's not his fault, but I can't ignore it either. On top of that, and I wrote this up a few month ago, his 2019 numbers, specifically the amount by which his Goals exceeded his xG, was off the charts, in a way that players almost never repeat. So even if he gets back to his regular self it's unlikely to match his 2019 results.
I don't want to get rid of him. And maybe Andrade and Thiago step up. But I do fear we're going to miss Taty a lot when he's gone, and none of the parts will equal his whole.

I agree. Great guy, but unfortunately he (if/when healthy) will likely be no more than an occasional late sub while chasing a goal. Finding a Taty equivalent separate from the parts we now have will be critical. The Brazilians should be a supplement to the replacement.

Another big question is simply how will we lineup? As this season progressed, we seemed to be structured for Taty to be THE goalscorer from the run of play, as opposed to previous years im which one dominant scorer was supplemented by multiple other scoring threats.
Will we get back to a point where we have 3 or more 10 goal scorers but no golden boot contender?
Im optimistic about Heber contributing next year, im not optimistic about depending on him.

. And maybe Andrade and Thiago step up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

The issue I have with Heber at this point is that his salary is disproportionate to his contribution. We can't sink almost $800k into a guy who might be an occasional late game sub while chasing a goal.

Based on limited footage from training/locker room/pre-game/post-game: Heber seems like an integral glue guy in the squad. Feels like you have to keep him, even if you just play him off the bench -- there's going to be A LOT of ups and downs and he should be able to buoy a lot of those downs.

Someone posted Doyle's NYCFC year end write-up in another thread. I strongly recommend that everyone read it.
First, it's basically NYCFC fan catnip, filled with lots of delicious goodness. Really. Trust me. This is the NYCFC column Doyle thought he would write for the last 4 years - not because he loves us but because he loves beautiful well-played soccer - and he finally got to do it.

Second, it contains a strong analysis of our roster strengths and needs. Some bullets - Taty finally became the dependable every game scorer you need - but nobody else did, after Medina showed promise the first couple of months - we really need back line depth - and more. It's really solid.

This 100. OTOH, the salary issue. But you're right. He's not just likeable. I think he's probably a major contributor to the team's chill but serious vibe.

Agree with all that Heber is a big question mark, but I am optimistic. I think his 2020 numbers had a lot to do with how the team was playing. I think ronny was still figuring things out.

I'm optimistic he'll be able to contribute more in 2022. But if not, I think Talles and Thiago have potential to step things up. If we lose taty, we will be taking a step back at first, but in time, I think we'll be ok. Both Talles, Thiago, and Santi seem almost like Taty was when he first arrived. If all three develop like he has, look out.

Taty ALWAYS put a shift in, even when he was missing sitters. I’ve yet to see Talles Magno sprint.

That's now. You couldn't say that about Taty when he first arrived. Taty was a flop machine. Every single tap and he fell over. He was neymar 2.0 in the flopping department. But he's learned and developed. Gotten stronger. Somehow developed a hold up play talent and became an aerial threat. Worked hard to develop an engine that let him play nearly every game for 90 mins and not stop! He was the ngolo kante of forwards with his engine.

Talles is far from Taty. But so was Taty when he first arrived. Talles and even Thiago both have potential and need to be developed, just like Taty. Whether they turn into gems like Taty did or not, only time will tell.
