I realized this morning that I slapped Paul on the ass about 7 times after Shelton tucked that one in the corner. What an unexpected bit of quality that was. I couldn't contain myself.

When TOR started winning, PV said he thought "we have nothing to lose" and threw on attacking subs (Lampard, with two assists, was obviously a game-changer, as was the switch back to a 4 3 3 after he came on).

One thing that was interesting is that Lampard came on for Pirlo, not Bravo. I thought Pirlo was off yesterday, but that is an unusual sub given past lineup preferences, particularly if he is going 4-3-3. I suspect it was just attributable to him feeling like Pirlo didn't have it since, as you said, he was going for the match at that point.

Also, in addition to the two assists, Lampard played a hugely important ball on the third goal. It wasn't a beautiful pass, but it was important because he was sort of stretching and got the ball between two Columbus players in a dangerous spot to Iraola. Iraola then passed it to Harrison who played it on to Shelton.

That third goal was so NYCFC. We were inches away from getting pegged back at 2-2 and had a sort of ugly scramble in front of the goal. But then it turned into a beautiful counter-attack to ice the game. It reminded me of the Orlando match last year when we were up 4-3 and Kaka hit the post on a free kick which turned into a goal at the other end to finish 5-3.

Very simply, PV didn't just play Lurch in a game with some pressure. He played him in, hands down, with no reasonably close comparison, the most crucial game of our season. I honestly think that says it all.

Another follow up on Eirik - Vieira specifically said he wanted to play him in the last game to see how he performs under pressure. I think there's a lot in that statement. In big games Saunders has looked out of his comfort zone (lets be honest, all games). This last game had a lot riding on it, and the semi's obviously will be the same. I think he knows Saunders is garbage in big games. Part of me thinks PV isn't ruthless enough to bench Saundy after "getting us here," but then again look at how easily he discarded Mix. Do what you need to do, Patty.

One thing I noticed was the after save resets. Saunders stays on the ground for a solid 3-5 seconds, Johansson is right back up and in the swing of things. If I'm not mistaken that pop right back to his feet probably saved us a goal that Saunders wouldn't have saved.

Also there is a key point we're not getting at here, Johanssen's height and arm span. When a goalie is 6'7 there are mistakes allowable, due to his body, that other players in that position simply cannot afford to make. Look at that dive to the right when the ball is coming in left, Johansson make the save with his foot, simply because his body affords him leeway that other players cannot imagine. EJ does not have to jump at all to put his hand over the top crossbar, and with a decent dive can probably save upper 90 shots.

As Johansseon continues his strength training and increases his agility in the box he will become a monster.

Also whoever put on the team sheet that Saunders is 6'4 is a dirty liar, Saunders is clearly a head or so shorter than EJ, not three inches.

That's what you get when you're 24. You're young, agile, athletic. Johansen get fall the ground quicker than Saunders and get up faster.

Shelton should just be a super sub though, and not start again. Whenever he comes on as a sub, he's a beast just blowing by defenders and scoring/ setting up plays. He has two good sub appearances, earns a start, and then sucks for 70 minutes until being subbed off and benched for a game or two. His speed/strength coming on in the 70/80th minute is unrivaled.

Pirlo has been off for months. I've watched far more errant passes from him than the wizardry he's known for for weeks on top of weeks now. Outside of holding the ball to break a defender or two, he has been largely ineffective.

It may be more that the Defense isn't used to taking orders from our GK - seriously - and instead they try to organize themselves, so when Lurch is yelling at them to shift/press/pass to him they aren't accustomed to trusting him and that he's reading the play correctly because they've been burned the entire season by Calamity Josh.

At training, I didn't hear Eirik once, but Josh you could hear loud and clear from across the field.

Prilo seems to need a midfield partner that understands off ball movement as well as he does. I agree with others that he seemed off for most of the game but I think it had a lot to do with him not having Iraola to work off. Bravo is much less of a threat with the ball and doesn't make the subtle shifts we are used to seeing when it's Iraola working with Pirlo.

On a side note I guess it is to be expected at this point but Mix was the only player noticeably absent during the end of game celebrations. Even Balloucy and Brant came out in street clothes. I wonder if he's already gone.
