NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2021

I decided to walk on the sunny side of the street but honestly I have the same sentiment as the article.
That said, let's get a W in the City of Brotherly Love (or Chester in reality) and gain some well deserved confidence.

We were better than the score in the 2-1 loss to DC and not as good as the 5-0 win over Cincy.
I'm not sure this game will tell us much either. A loss Away to this Union team is not shameful, and a win will be tainted ambiguous, because they will either be rotated or tired and focused on Atlanta in the CCL.

doyle with a little writeup about sands at the bottom half of this article. he's picking on the weakest part of Sands's game, which is making progressive passes. The clip he includes to prove the point makes you wonder if he saw the pass and didn't take it, or if he just didn't see it. either way, these are the types of passes he needs to make from the D-mid position with regularity.

That being said, if Morales is going to have a larger role in our lineup as a starter, Sands may become a regular on the back line in order to get Parks on the field. Of course, if Parks continues his average to bad performances, he might just drop to the bench and a new midfield trio will be born!

The clip shows what the pass would have been, a pass going over the defender in front of Tinnerholm. I wonder if he's just not comfortable taking those types of chances or lacks confidence from those types of passes.

Nearly all we see from him are passes that stay on the ground. He will occasionally hit a cross-field high pass, but that is usually just to switch the field and isn't finding a runner. He also doesn't find himself in possession along the sideline all that often.

I just can't recall anything from him going over defenders though and wonder if that particular type of pass just isn't something he's good at, or if it's just something that he lacks confidence in.

as a CB, he is a plus passer and a good defender. As a DMid, he’s an OK passer and a good defender. Hope that makes sense.

yes but the question is WHY?

you would think he'd be taking more risk by attempting forward passing as the last man back. if he messes up that's it. as a d-mid, at least if he's blocked or picked off, he has two CBs behind him still. it's strange that he is more comfortable with the forward passes as a CB than a D-MID. i have a theory that it is simply that as a CB he has better vision of the field and doesn't get pressed as quickly as he does when playing d-mid. That bit of extra time and wider field view helps him make the progressive passes. If my theory is true, then what his D-mid game is missing is the ability to think 2 steps ahead and make that pass before he's closed down.

I don't think he's less comfortable making progressive passes as a D-mid vs a CB. Haven't seen a difference there at all.

maybe it’s a mindset? The CB initiated in our build up. The DMid is forced to break a line sometimes in our build up. Maybe he’s just more comfortable starting the build up and not breaking the line.
What’s curious I think is that he’s very comfortable dribbling forward from our own box and picking a pass.
So maybe you’re right. He’s not comfortable with defenders at his back. But Parks. Parks is great in tight spaces. So I think the partnership the way it’s set up now with 3 ATB could be terrific. Or even if James displaces Callens

I know the hype in the title is for clicks but it was a very different and gushingly positive assessment of the signing which I was not expecting after initial comments here
